I had a fantastic job for a while but was laid off. I’m now working in a job that I guess is okay but I’m not happy. Sometimes I dread waking up in the morning but all in all, it’s not unbearable. However, I am barely getting paid enough to get by. I have rent, utilities, gas bill, car payment, insurance and gas, groceries, student loans, credit cards and I have to pay for my own health coverage since it’s not offered through work. Sometimes I have to decide whether I’m going to eat or pay for electricity. I have no chance for a raise but it’s proving difficult to find another job in this financial market. I figure I can scrimp until I find something I like, instead of going from this to another stressful job. Wish me luck!!

I’m putting this goal aside for awhile. My job isn’t all that bad and I get paid good for what I do. School will have to wait for awhile also. I just don’t have the money or the time right now. With the way the economy is right now I think it’s best just to stay right where I am.

My own business 8 months ago

I decidedly don’t like the job I’m doing now. But i don’t hate it either.
I’m considering asking to go to part time there and looking into going back to school and possibly starting my own business sometime in the future.

Find out if I like the job I want 10 months ago

I have been offered an amazing opportunity.

I will take a week’s vacation from my current job and work as a temporary contractor at the company that I interviewed with last week.

This will give me real expereince in the industry that will allow me to assess if this is a field that I really want to get into and if this small office is somewhere I could really work. It will also give me something in that industry to put on my resume. Also it gives them a chance see my work ethic and abilities. And it fuels the hiring manager’s case to his bosses that he should be able to hire an additional person and that person should be me.

The details aren’t hashed out but it could very well happen with in the next 2 weeks!!

IMO, it’s not worth having a job you hate. I found a freelance writing job with steady work…I work from home, don’t have to spend gas and time driving to and from an office, I can be home with my pets and eat/talk on the phone/take smoke breaks whenever I feel like it. So wonderful!

I found a job listing that pretty much describes my and my qualifications exactly. I’m tempted to apply because I think I could actually do it really well and I like the products that that company makes.

But, its not in the industry I want to work in. I’m not happy here, so I should know that picking up my current job and tweeking the content isn’t going to work out.

I’m tempted to apply for it as a backup plan or something. Lay offs in my office means that all the jobs I’m applying for are going to get some hearty competition real soon.

2 more applications 11 months ago

2 positions opened at one of my dream companies. But I messed up on of the cover letters so I suspect I won’t be considered for either position. Oh well. Even though that company is one I’d love to work for, the actual job descriptions sounded really unexciting.

They will likely pay less, buy I’m still stoked on three other jobs that I’m waiting on, as they sound like much more fun. I just now am realizing that I need a social/people component to a job to make me want to show up in the morning.

Another application 11 months ago

I submitted a big application package for a government job yesterday. Its actually one that I feel really good about and think I have a good shot at. But… its a government job, so the hiring process is slow and methodical. I likely won’t even hear if I’m even on the short list for another 7-9 weeks!
With any luck I’ll know about the other job in just a week or two and then I have a hard decision to make. This governement one is most suited to my skills and will pay significantly more. But the one where my friends work could let me quit my current job sooner and is working with more interesting technologies, even if in a less challenging roll.

I need to get away 12 months ago

I applied for another job last night. Another of those that I’m probably not qualified for… I meet all of their must requirements and NONE of their preferred qualifications.

I’m infuriated with my company right now for a vacation requirement that just turned my whole YEAR upside down as far as time off goes. But I’m taking it in stride and although I could probably get an exception, I’m taking the time off because I do really really need to get out of that place and since I don’t have another job yet, a week will have to do.

I’m trying to figure out how to use this to my advantage for that job that I’m still waiting to hear from. Maybe its a legit excuse to contact the guy again. “I wanted to let you know that I’ll have limited email access next week…” Could work? But I’m feeling like my email last week obviously didn’t work, so why would this one.

Resume mass mailings 12 months ago

I put 3 more resumes in tonight.
One on an industry job board and 2 at specific companies. I tried to also apply for a government job but their recruitment website kept freezing on me. I know about jobs I don’t like and incompetent IT support ranks right up there on my list of reasons to LEAVE a job, I certainly won’t apply somewhere with visible IT issues.
