Hello! I’m 23 and I’ve been dying my hair since I was 14. I had waist length hair when my hair was natural. Now with all the dyes I can’t grow past bra strap length. I had red, black, brown, bleach blonde, green and pink hair.
To prepare for growing out my dye I dyed my hair for the last time dark brown(ended up being too dark..darker than my natural color..I hope it will fade a bit). I cut all the damage ends. Now I have collarbone length hair with a blunt hemline. I had many layers and a straight across cut will be easier to take care of. I hate layers.. split ends were everywhere. 4 weeks ago

sophieelizabeth362Just starting- *6 weeks*

Hi everyone, Im joing this forum because im hoping by the looks of it many of you are going through the same thing i am. I have naturally mousy brown hair and i amgetting married in two years a desperately want to have natural, healthy and shiny hair. Ive dyed sinc ei was 15 and am now 22 and have just had enough with the upkeep, the cost, the dry and damaged hair and the fact that you never ever get the colour you imagine. For years i read magazine and saw models and celbrities with their seemingly amzing hair and though I want that colour! Im not stupid and am pretty academic so have a few brain cells inside me but even so It took me until the age 22 to realise that the designer hair i was striving for was in fact the very hair that growns out your head! How could I have been so stupid- I truely wish id never ever gone there- i bleech the toilets at home and look at it and think did i seriously think that was a good idea! Anyhow- im commited to never dying again and im determined to stick by this forever. Some days i see the end goal, i imagine having my own, tailored colour hair with great condition and feel empowered to do this. other days it makes me lietrally cry becaus eim so embarrased, self consious and overhwelmed by this task. Im only 6 weeks in and only have 3-4 icnh but i am commited. its nice to read other peoples experinces, both those who are doing this now and those who have completed it. Hopefully we can keep encouraging each other and one day theyll be light (or dark) at the end of the tunnel for all of us! 2 months ago

Grace21 Months

Very almost finished! And to be honest, in my eyes this goal has been completed as I am finally happy with the way may hair looks and feels. I think it’s taken so long to achieve because I didn’t want to cut my hair shorter in order to speed up getting rid of the dye, and I’m so glad I stuck it out. Now my hair is long, mostly my natural colour, (with a few “ombre” ends!) and feeling happy again. 2 months ago

sonjarooOnly 8 weeks in

Hey guys!
I want to grow out my hair dye as well.
Here’s my story in the last 12 months I have gone from jetblack to a warm light brown to very dark brown to bleach blonde (bleached a total of 4 times, my thick hair took it well, thank god) back to an ashy brown (think megan fox)

I’ve been dyeing my hair for about 14 yrs ( i’m 28 now ) and about 8 weeks ago I decided to stop dyeing my hair completely. No more semi,low-, highlights or whatever..just growing.
So, I went to the hairdresser 2 weeks ago and they cut off about 9 inches, I figured it helps the progress.

It’s a long bob now and here’s a photo of my growth. Sorry, for the terrible photo, but I took it this morning before jumping in the shower.
BTW, the photo on the right is inverted so the growth is easier to see.

As you can tell, the ashy brown faded and it’s starting to look brassy (ugh!)
I really need you girls to motivate me a little. How long, do you think will it take to grow the hair dye out to shoulder length, considering the growth from my photo??

Anyways, best of luck to all of us and our goals! 5 months ago

MichaelaGrowing out a root malfunction!

I’ve had highlighted/dyed blonde hair for quite awhile now, I have naturally light brown hair and have always kept it highlighted to be blonde! today I got my roots done and the rest of my hair lightened, it looks great expect the roots, the roots are way way too light and looks ridicolus with my dark thick eyebrows! I know the light blonde is a pretty color and will look much much better once my dark roots grow in, more natural, less obnoxious but it will take a good month, maybe a little less if I’m lucky…. ah, hair, always a challenge. but worth it! good luck to the rest of you with your hair issues, patience is a virtue….. but not an easy one, lol. the attached pic is of my hair a good couple years ago back when it was more natural, I want that back! 7 months ago

oblea100xCan't buy me love, love, can't buy me love, no no no, NOOOOOOOO

(The Beatles)

Last time I dyed my hair was last August, and they matched it very well. I was worried that the color would fade and look blondish with dark roots again, but it never did. I haven’t cut the actual dyed sections of my hair, but you can’t tell the difference, and it hasn’t been a concern for some months now. So, I’m checking this as done. :) I almost dyed it red last month, but remembered how much I want pretty, long, silky hair, and how much dyes damage it, and remained steadfast. (Steadfast is my new favorite word and I try to use it everyday…) Anyway some people think it’s virgin, so to speak :p so I really don’t need to cut out the ends for now. I’l let it grow some more, then get a trim. 11 months ago

ellelaelepperson1 YEAR!

Can I just say, that this has been an awful trying to grown out my roots. It’s actually been 1 year and 1 month, but who’s counting? I hate the color of my hair, I get so many comments about the two different colors. It’s about 6 1/2 inches right now. I died my hair brown for 3 years and started noticing how damaged it was getting, so I decided that Prom was the last time I would dye my hair and I’d just get my original color back.

Unfortunately the brown has turned to a reddish brown, and my natural color is a sandy blonde, so it’s extremely noticeable and they contrast with one another making my natural hair color look gray!!! I don’t want to cut it because I definitely don’t look good with short hair and I’ll miss my long hair too much. I have to wait till it’s a little past mid chest for it to even look remotely good. Probably another year for me, but I’m glad other people feel my pain. We’ll all get through this, and we’ll have beautiful, healthy, shiny hair one day again. (: 12 months ago

KayleeI Couldn't Do It...

I chickened out, just got to thinking how much I like my shoulder length hair, I don’t think I can lose the length, I’ll just wait a little while longer before cutting it :’( 15 months ago

Kaylee♡ 15 Months ♡

Nearly there now… ^^

I’ve decided to dive in head first and get the remainder cut off, I’m going from shoulder length hair to something like Hayden Panettiere’s bob hair cut. Wish me luck eep

I’m glad to see that everyone else is doing so well, keep up the good work :) 15 months ago

Grace10 months!

Well …it’s ten months since the last dye …and I’m still holding out! To be honest, I know it looks terrible but I don’t even really see my hair when I look in the mirror. I do if I pay attention, but I try to avoid doing so – to stay in a good mood! I think by August it should be two thirds of the way there, I just really want to hit the definite halfway point. Occasionally I see top half of my face in the mirror and it’s surrounded by all natural healthy shiny mousy brown hair. Happy feeing inside <3 15 months ago

yerrisnorris86:(

have about 5 inches of root now. i feel awful!! My roots are mousy brown but the dyed hair has turned orangy brown and looks horrible because the colours totally clash! i am thinking of trying to dye the ends a more ashy tone… somehow
it’s nearly winter so i will be wearing my hat almost all the time just so i don’t have to look at this mess! i just have to keep reminding myself that it will only take 6 more months. 18 months ago

Kaylee♡ 1 Year Today ♡

So its finally happened I now have one year of healthy, shiny, unprocessed roots. I’m hoping by Christmas I’ll have enough for a short blonde bob to get rid of all the black-brown hair dye for once and for all.

P.S. Can’t wait to have long blonde hair, my shoulders feel lonely. 19 months ago

Grace5 months!

5 months…how am I ever going to finish this? My roots are so awful, and I just can’t get over the amount of people who feel like they need to ask me when I’m next dying my hair. I’m actually quite glad I’m back working again because it saves me from the mirror – something which I’ve grown to really hate. I cannot WAIT for my mousy brown hair to grow back, (that’s shiny, smooth and healthy) and I am honestly never going to let people say brown is boring ever again <3. I'm hoping that by Christmas the top part of my hair and a bit beyond will be a natural colour, meaning I can pass the gingery blonde off as a (slightly disastrous!) ombre/dip-dye. ugh. I know its ridiculous, but part of me so wishes I could just skip the whole next year of my life. 20 months ago

KayleeNearly 10 months... <3

I’ve been dying my naturally minky blonde hair black-brown for the best part of 3 years. Since the end of last October I have been growing the hair dye out with the intention of having my natural hair colour back once again. This March I had my hair cut into a very short bob to encourage growing.
There is now around 5 inches of growth in the sections underneath the blackened dead ends and about 3-4 inches of growth from the top layer. All in all I’m about a third of the way into my journey. It’s odd how something so small can make you feel so unsightly. Any time I go out, I find myself hiding my reverse ombre style hair in a strange messy updo – though its rather noticeable :’( cannot wait to have beautiful, shiny long blonde hair.

So, just out of curiosity, in terms of completing this, how long does it take..? I thought it’d be no more than 2 years – that’d be including growing to below shoulder length natural colour.

I couldn’t agree more with livelaughlove1 – life feels like its ‘call waiting’ at the moment :’(

Congratulations to all of you who have succeeded, and good luck to all who are just starting or still not at the end of this long long road. 21 months ago
