I have decided on building a trimaran as my first boat, nothing special, only 20 feet, but thats okay for a first boat i think. Built in Plywood. My next one will be a little bigger and more aimed toward ocean cruising.

How to build a boat"I was amazed at what I could create if I put my mind to it."
How I did it: First I got the idea of building a boat, a boyhood dream whose time has come.I bought the plans for a 10' Row/sail/motor dinghy from DUDLEY DIX YACHT DESIGN. I bought the material I needed, following the parts list supplied with the plans. Three sheets of plywood, a huge number of screws, glue, paint. Then we started cutting out the parts from the plywood, and started the assembly. The stich-and-glue technique is easy enough to quickly get a boat shape and keep the spirits up. After about a month the dinghy was completed to the level of all woodwork completed and covered. A year later I spent another month or so finishing the metalwork and the oars and the paintwork.I wrote a blog about it: http://argie10.blogspot.com Lessons & tips:

More "How I Did It" stories
How I did it: I decided that I needed to build a boat, the problem was that I know nothing about boats, tools, wood, or even how to sail. I started with plans for a small canoe that I found for free online. My brother and I worked together through much of the process (though he didn't know any more about building a boat than I did). We followed the instructions (more or less), and in a few weeks we had a little red canoe. Read how I did it…

I’ve always wanted to build a boat, so I’m going to. This is something small and simple. Hopefully I’ll want to do something bigger once I’ve got this one done. Probably won’t get started till winter when work slows down, though. A friend of mine is going to build one, too, so we’re going to build them side by side in my father’s barn.
I ordered and received the plans and patterns for the Glen-L Eight Ball, an 8’ sail/row/outboard dinghy. I think at first, I’ll set it up to row, just to make sure it actually floats.
I’m thinking either a cedar strip kayak/canoe or a plywood rowing/sailing dinghy. I already know how to paddle, so sailing and rowing would be something cool to learn. But at the same time, cedar strip boats can turn out to be rally really pretty.
Something that lasts and that i can take on the water, maybe to share one day with a son or daughter (preferably get it built before that!)
My list of favorite boats

2. Junks (djonks)
3. Dories
4. Trimarans

bnutmeg looking forward to some unremarkable weekends and making headway!
I’ve started amassing milk cartons for the Milk Carton Derby on July 11th at Greenlake. Mimi & Donald have graciously allowed me to build this puppy in their garage. I’m still not 100% committed to the racing category (versus showboat), but I’m leaning that way for sake of more fun engineering. I mean, I can make it pretty anyhow, can’t I?
I have a couple different ideas, some of which might not be within the rules and some of which might just sink like rocks or rip apart when made from milk cartons instead of, er, appropriate materials. I’m going to draw some up and maybe swing by Home Depot for a little research today.

Definitely the answer!

For a certain definition of “boat”....
Something that supports at least one human, can be conveyed away from shore/dock and back again, preferably can be used more than once… hmmmm maybe not that last one
Should I just enter the milk carton boat building contest? Probably.
I am beginning to read a book on boat building called: “Classic Small Craft You Can Build” Its pretty good so far, and actually as old as it is, referred to a boat building class that is still being held i found out…right near where I live, it’s over in Mystic, CT! The path is real! Find yours and synchronicity will show you your heart
