Assuming Washington, DC is what is meant, I’ve done this and highly recommend it. I actually live in the vicinity now. There is so much to see here; the Smithsonian Institution (all the many buildings) are terrific and free. The National Zoo is huge and beautiful, and of course they currently have a baby panda. The National Gallery of Art is also a wonderful experience.
One bit of advice: if you do go to the Zoo, try to go as early in the morning as you can. You see more animals awake and moving that way. The last time I went, we arrived around 8 am or so and the lion was up and roaring! They were also exercising the cheetahs. Both of those things were terrific!
