Change is supposed to be hard, right? 1 year ago

Introduced a significant change at work this week.

Definitely out of my comfort zone and expect to spend the month of December being yelled at by many people. But I think it’s an important, worthwhile change that will take advantage of the amazing talents, skills and passions of my coworkers.

What a way to close 2007!

30 Reasons 2 years ago

I’m currently reading a book that frustrates and inspires me titled 30 Reasons Employees Hate their Managers by Bruce L. Katcher.

While I find the book flip and simplistic, I believe that every one of those 30 Reasons are true. Employees feel that they are treated like children, not respected, not provided with necessary resources, and feel unappreciated.

Wish employees could see that their managers feel the same conflict—we hate being parental, saying no, stretching budgets, and working long hours without recognition.

For me, being a better boss will require not letting destructive, passive-aggressive behaviors go unnoticed (either from myself or my co-workers.) It would be so much easier to ignore this stuff—I’m not a confrontational person, so this is my biggest challenge.

I find this a little easier when I remind myself that I’m not confronting people for my own sake, but on behalf of those who are too intimidated/resigned/unhappy/passive to speak up.

I was recently at a gathering where people were ripping on their bosses b/c they let people get away with some terrible behaviors. It finally dawned on me that people are waiting, waiting, waiting for their bosses to do something and that they are never going to take matters into their own hands (and maybe they shouldn’t; I’m still not sure about that part.)

I guess I’ve got a lot of work ahead of me!

I got promoted six months ago to manager, I was placed in charge over ladies that I have been working with for several years. These women are dear people and I have been there for them during all sorts of things good and bad. Now, since I am a supervisor, I must of course keep the company running smoothly. But I do not want these people that I have been so close with for so many years to feel different about me. I knew taking the position that it would be different, I don’t want to stop seeing them as people and looking at them as production numbers, but I want to be effective in my duties as well.

On my way! 3 years ago

For the past 2 years i have been subleasing space from another business. As our business are complimentry it has always been the other business’s logos and advertising style that i’ve used to not create confusion. For some time now i have wanted to move out into my own shop with my own branding etc.

Well FINALLY, that is going to happen, I signed a lease last week on my own place and today is the day that i give my 4 weeks notice of my intention to leave.

For the last 2 weeks i’ve felt like i’ve been on a rollercoster just teatering at the top of the first scary discent, and here it is the first giant drop in the rest of my life!

wish me luck!
