Picked this up from the library. I’ve enjoyed it. The chapter on Chinese writing is quite heavy, but I’ve enjoyed learning a little about the Chinese way of life.
In my opinion, when it comes to such treasures as Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy, I Am Legend and Chocolat I would recommend watching the film first (which I accept is difficult when books have been around since birth and films are popped out at age 20yrs+).
I was VERY disappointed with Hitchikers Guide film. It was a mess. How on Earth could two hours do justice to a tome of greatness. I must watch the 1981 TV series.
I enjoyed the Chocolat film, but struggled to keep the appearance of those characters out of my head when I read the book. It would have been nice to forget the film and to forge my own ideas on what these characters looked like, purely from how the book described them. I mean, Roux is red-headed for goodness sakes! A far cry from dark featured Johnny Depp!
after seeing the film. I’m glad I watched the film first (although I didn’t realise at the time it was based on a book).
I enjoyed the film so much but felt there was much unexplained. I found myself questioning a lot of the events in the film and couldn’t help bringing it up for discussion in the workplace!

‘I am Legend’ is an excellent book. I have surprised myself because I made an assumption I didn’t like the horror genre, after reading a few of the Stephen King books when I was much younger.
This book is claimed to be a mix of sci-fi and horror. So I guess I like it because it’s not pure horror and not only set out to disgust readers with descriptions of gore and torture!!!
I am about half way through at the moment and have stopped reading it temporarily, but not through lack of interest. Unfortunately, it was such a good read I skipped many chapters ahead to get a glimpse of what was to come!!! Wish I hadn’t but I couldn’t help it!!!
The book is SO different from the film. From what I’ve read so far I don’t think the film begins from less than halfway through the book.
The book explains everything for me that I couldn’t understand from the overview provided by the film. In all fairness, I’m guessing the directors wanted to make more of a blockbuster than a film that really dealt with the nitty-gritty. In this case, watching the film first definitely beat reading the book first. Otherwise, I probably would have been desperately disappointed with the film.
I AM LEGEND
A psycho serial murderer has a new neighbor and interesting things happen. Nice read. Sometimes even thrillingly interesting. I generally like Rendell’s crime novels.
Using techniques of verbal self-defense in contacts with doctors, medical staff, etc. I mostly enjoyed the discussion about the relationship between stress and health.
Analysis of verbal attacks in English and appropriate defense methods. Has some good ideas, but many of them don’t apply to my native language. The book in general reminded me of rewrites – exercises in which you get an English sentence and a key word. You have to rewrite the original sentence, using that key word, and thus learn (ideally) the subtleties of the English language. Back in high-school, learning English as a second language, we did hundreds of these rewriting exercises every week.
Picked it up out of anthropological curiosity. Possibly the scariest book I’ve ever read. Was written in 1929. Obviously many things changed since then, even in good society. Also, I come from a different culture so many of things that remain valid simply do not apply to me. However, could not help feeling petrified and extremely uncultured. Emily Post should be a character in a horror movie.
