Visiting a camp. 2 years ago

I would suggest you research which camps to visit before you decide to go. I have been to Dachau, in Germany, and Mauthausen, and Gusen in Austria. Of the three, I think you could spend a day at Dachau, simply because of the immense size of the camp (which has been reduced in size over time), and the vast collection of historical artifacts and information to read in the museum section and the films they show there. Mauthausen you could probably spend half a day there, not nearly as large as Dachau, and all that remains of Gusen is the crematorium, very sad place, very small. Gusen was an accessory camp to Mauthausen which is nearby.

The camps are places for reflection about the history behind what occurred on that land. All experiences I have had during a visit have been powerful emotionally because when you realize the numbers of people exterminated on that soil, it’s truly unfathomable the horror they went through.

Afterwards you’ll develop a profound appreciation for the life you’ve had. And you’ll hopefully work toward not taking things for granted…(this is assuming that you already do, if not then whatever).
