I started in radio at aged 18 and have spent now more than 12 years in broadcasting. I have worked just about every format and shift you can imagine and gone from pushing the buttons to launching radio stations. I have also seen more than my fair share of people desperate to break into radio but who don’t have the right tool and the right guidance. So that’s why I started this website. To help with advice, guidance and products that can really truly help you become a radio DJ. As a good friend of mine once said radio ‘it isn’t rocket science,’ and that sure is true. But mastering broadcasting is indeed an art and like all things the more you learn the better you will be. Look around, read the blogs, post your comments and ask your questions. It’s all welcome.

I had one full semester of prime time DJ’ing 9 hours a week from 1-4 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. I say that would count to cross this off my list, BUT! I have a very exciting semester coming up, and I’m going to leave this open to continue journaling about my experiences.
My first show of the year will be at 10 am to 1 pm on Wednesday. I can’t wait to get back at it :) 18 months ago

How I did it: On my campus, there is a very large radio station. At first, admittedly, it was a little daunting because there were so many people there, but eventually I started to recognize some people, and they came to recognize me. It eventually got to the point where some people were surprised to learn that I didn't have a radio show, and encouraged me to get one! So, with some new inspiration, I decided to apprentice whenever next possible.
I ended up with a show with a DJ who was on from 1-3am. I loved it, even though it was a lot of memorization and I only got to play music for fifteen minutes of the entire two hour show. So, I went to work memorizing everything possible so I could pass the test at the end of the apprenticeship period.
I passed, and have been an official DJ with my own show for two semesters now! It's something I look forward to every week, and I love every part of it from planning to show to bantering with my own apprentices. Read how I did it… 23 months ago

At the end of my show on friday, my manager walks into the studio and says,
“You are so good at radio.”
It’s funny how such simple words can make you feel so good inside. 1 year ago

This valentine’s day, me and a fellow DJ are going on a dinner date with 2 (lucky) listeners. They are asked to submit three reasons why they should go on a date with us, and by Friday the 12th we pick our winners.
This can potentially be really awesome…. or really awkward. But I guess I have nothing to lose, right? It’ll either be super fun or super stupid, and either way life will go on.
I’m going to try my best to let the guys I like know about it, in a sly way. Not too obvious, so they’ll feel clever if they decide to submit their reasons. I hope one of them does… that be pretty romantic. And I’m in need of a romantic valentine’s day. 2 years ago

I am a DJ on my high school’s radio station; we have the same equipment and music as top 40 stations like 99.5 and a supervisor who worked on radio for years giving us tips..
it’s a blast expressing yourself on air…having debates, letting the audience give you input and just saying what you want to say and have people actually listen. totally worth it 4 years ago

Even though I started a bit later than most(34), it was a dream come true breaking into sports broadcasting in the Washington DC market.
Covering Georgetown basketball, the Redskins, Bullets[now Wizards], interviewing guys like Sugar Ray Leonard, Macho Camacho, Joe Gibbs, John Thompson and a bunch of others was an incredible experience.
Getting paid to do something I loved almost seemed like stealing. The money wasn’t great, but I was able to parlay my exposure in the community into other paying gigs(VO’s, Appearances…).
If you’re beyond college age like I was, you’ll have to be wise about breaking in, as I discovered broadcasting schools were ripoffs. I read a report by a guy in the business for a lot of years at broadcastingcareer.com, it made sense, I followed his advise and went for it, and eventually found my way on WTEM in a large market.
Best job I ever had because it hardly seemed like work. Coming back to L.A. was a career mistake but a family necessity for me at the time. 4 years ago

Filled in for 6 weeks at the school radio station when I was in college. I mostly covered the Jazz shows, although I didn’t know jazz at all! Still, it was great fun to be on the air, and learn how to work the boards. A fun experience that not everyone gets a chance to do. 6 years ago
