Once I am back in the states taking an EMT-B course is something I am planning on doing. Mainly for the knowledge and gained experience. I can honestly say I did not have a lot of interest in medicine/health care until I took a Wilderness First Responder course. I discovered it’s actually something that I found fascinating and really enjoy. I view taking the EMT course as a stepping stone, the exact path it’ll lead is still open, but it’s something I want to pursue.

How to become an EMT"Incredibly fulfilling!"
How I did it: I took a course at the local community college, taught by one of the fire captains. It was a one semester course with both lecture and lab portions. We also rode out on the fire station ambulances for one shift. Lessons & tips: Study hard! Resources: www.nremt.org |

How I did it: Enrolled in the classes, hit the books, and paid attention in the lab and during my clinicals. It could be trying at times, but I just stuck with it and kept on studying and learning as much as I could. Read how I did it…

I’m 25 years old and I’ve finally decided what it is I want to do in life: become an EMT.

I passed my EMT-B class with an A! Whoo Hoo! I have also taken and passed the cognitive portion of my national exams. I am going down to Baton Rouge to take the practical portion this weekend! Then I will OFFICIALLY be an EMT-Basic!
I just have to get my third Hep-B shot and retake COR training, and then I’m ready to start taking classes. I’ll hopefully start EMT-B classes this summer – I’m excited!

I am currently in classes to get my EMT Basic certification. Classes end December 15 and I will get to go down to do my practicals in January. I plan on pursuing my Associates in Paramedicine, which will start in August 2009. (So far so good, by the way, with the classes – all A’s)

I volunteer with a first aid squad and it is the best feeling in the world. When I completed the class and found out I passed my exam and was a certified EMT I had never felt so happy. I’ve been an EMT for about 6 months now and I love it.
Most Stressful summer I ever had but it was worth it! Feels great to be certified. I had a great Instructor that really knew what she was doing. The road wasn’t without it’s ups and downs though… However feels great to have come this far.
Took the National Test and found out this morning that I made it!!! Whew…what a relief!! That test was a pain and a half..I felt like I bombed it for sure, and didn’t feel like attempting it again if I did happen to fail…but I passed!!

“all the EMS workers I see go into it fairly young. Is 28 much older than average for going into this career?”
