I was surfing the web, looking for a fireproof lockbox, and stumbled on this site. (Now of course, I’m distracted from the task and hand – but I just HAVE to know how many other tasks I need to add to my “To Do” list.)

To properly store paper documents, you need a fireproof box with a temperature UL rating of at least 350 for 60 minutes. You also want the fireproof box to be waterproof to protect from the gushing water emitted from firefighters’ hoses. Don’t get a box that is only water resistant.

It’s difficult to think about it, let alone write an entry, but we came perilously close to losing everything a few nights ago when the fires here in Canyon Country and other parts of Santa Clarita and SoCal were still raging. We were trying to relax after being evacuated the night before, watching a movie in the living room. It was about 11 pm at night. Our roommate had been in her room studying, when she heard a guy laying on his car horn and irritatedly wondered what the hell he was doing, so she peeked out her window. She came out to the living room, oddly casual, and said, “Hey, guys, come look out my window.”We look out and across the street is a huge fire. The big brush covered hill was aflame, as well as 2 homes. There were no sirens, no firetrucks, nothing. We started grabbing everything that we’d unpacked from being evacuated the night before and ran it down to the cars. We were in full panic mode. I began throwing up. We pounded on neighbor’s doors because no one was aware of the fire. We got out of there. People began calling and texting us because our apartment complex popped up on the news. Rumors that it was on fire reached us.
The firefighters showed up sometime after we fled to my fiance’s father’s house. We were lucky that we were across the street because it acted as a fire break and the fire didn’t reach us. The two homes that were on fire are gone. Some of our neighbors stood down the street in the parking lot of the grocery store and watched planes do water drops on the fire and called us around 2 to 3 am when it became under control.
After the last two nights since then, I’ve realized that I may be having nightmares of looking outside and seeing fires for a while.
ANYWAYS… I’ve found that it would be an excellent idea to acquire a fireproof box and keep my most important things and mementos in it. So that if I ever come that close to home loss again that I at least won’t have to worry about that box.
In it: A home inventory that I want to make, for insurance purposes. Mementos, pictures etc. Various important papers.
