It’s amazingly freeing to just stop caring what people think of you and to just let loose. Singing is so much fun, even if you suck, and trust me, I do.

I’ve never given a bad performance at Karaoke. But recently I thought I should stretch myself a bit and try a song that isn’t easy to sing. (I could sing “Born to Be Wild” in my sleep.) SO I selected a song that is difficult to sing: It’s tenor, andnI’m baritone (too few songs for me anyway) and it changes in register from tenor to falsetto and back several times, and you dare not blow one leap. It was “Crying” by Roy Orbison. The guy who operated the apparatus was an Orbison fan and was thrilled that someone was doing an Orbison. And I totally nailed it! He was pleased with the result, and I was thinking, as I sang, “Can I really be doing it THIS GOOD”?

i’ve done it on the bus, on the street at night, in the park, even in a fancy restaraunt during dinner hours. usually a disney song or something by the beatles – they’re easier to sing with friends since everyone knows them.

OOOOOOOOOOOklahoma 3 years ago

I was in Toronto, outside a dyke bar, I’d traveled up there by bus just to meet some dykes I’d met online. I began singing Oklahoma! at the top of my lungs and people on the sidewalk were joining in. It was a blast.

I’ve also sang on stage, and recently joined a Peace Choir even though I am not a professional and can’t read music but I love to sing, so why not? Sunday I am going to join the choir at church. I love the way people look at you when you are singing in public, even if you are not that great, they envy you..it takes guts.

yeah, i’m the one with the ear phones on in kroger or HEB singing to the music… but hey i have had an invitation to sing at a jazz club so i guess it isn’t all that bad… just strange ;)

I think it was TGI Friday's, 4 years ago

but then again, singing in the church choirs doesn’t hurt.

Neither does listening to jazz on NPR on weekends and nights, reading books on jazz, practicing with the lyrics you can get on line and in sheet music.

Also, go listen to others sing.

Most importantly, start singing!

Kegs and Kareoke machines don’t mix.
I can’t sing, and I should never torture people that way again.
