Known as a costume stylist to the stars in her past, Barbara Tfank is now a legendary fashion designer that brings ready-to-wear back on the runway. Her Doris Day mode with traces of the classic “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” style makes her designs in high demand at Barneys.
A native to New York, Barbara Tfank earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Skidmore College, and then went on to pursue her Master’s from Stanford. Finding a passion for design and art along the way, Tfank took up an apprenticeship with designer Cesarani. She began her career in the design field doing costumes for feature films and television commercials. Since then, many of Tfank’s high fashion creations have been worn at red carpet events by A list celebrities like Uma Thurman.
Although Tfank usually finds inspiration in ageless films, her recent Fall collection was inspired by a notorious painting that hangs in the New York MoMA. Fernand Leger’s painting, “The Three Women,” depicts three abstractly shaped nude women, shaded mostly in brown, black, and gray. Small hints of primary colors seep through this painting, making it contrast sharply against the overall neutral palette. Mrs. Tfank integrated all of these qualities and characteristics into her 2008 Fall line. The stark red lipstick dresses emphasize the hourglass figure, cinched at the waist with black belts that further define these curves and illuminate the design. Bright primary colors are framed sporadically on the black silhouette to give the outfit life. Many of the materials Tfank chose are metallic, silk, or a thick double quilted fabric, with a hint of natural and circular patterns woven throughout the textile.
I want to be a fashion designer IM really passionate about I have loads of dreams and being a fashion designer is 1 of it
I LIKE TO BE FASHION DESIGNER COZ IM ARTIST AND GIFTED BY NATURE . I JUST NEED THE FIRST STEPS
My mom once dreamed of becoming a fashion designer long before I was born. She never told me that but I had a similar desire when I was in high school. I love to sew and peice material together in creative and interesting ways. I love to wander through a material store and check out the fabrics. I personally like the sheen of polyester blends and silks, not to hot on the cheap course weave synthetics. Love cottons too.
Good luck to all of you who see the possibilities in fabric.

i’ve wanted to be a fashion designer since forever. i’ve never had the opportunity to grow my talent, though. i know machine and hand basics. my knowledge, however, is still severely limited. i’m trying to build up experience in different sorts of techniques but it’s hard when i only have myself as a reference. my mother is, shall we say, less than encouraging.
i’m so concerned about trying to go to college for this kind of thing because if i go i will have such limited experience, and i’m afraid they want you to know what you’re doing to a certain extent. and i sadly do not.
any useful tidbits?
