Consider new ways of applying my existing skills and knowledge

Calissa is home again... for now.

New territory 14 months ago

I was going to mark this as something I’ve given up on. I’m back at uni and so I thought that my focus is on learning new things, not on applying existing knowledge in new ways.

But that’s not true. I’m doing postgraduate work. I’m taking my existing knowledge of mental health, adding to it and combining it with my creative writing skills to write a fantasy story that will form my thesis. Postgraduate work in the field of creative writing is still something quite new to academia. This way of applying my writing skills and my knowledge of the fantasy genre is something quite new to me. Finally, researching portrayals of mental health in fantasya and providing a different kind of portrayal is also something new to the field.

Exercising 2 years ago

I think one of the reasons I chose to add this goal this year is because I feel that simply having knowledge is not necessarily enough. Or at least not for me. Knowledge must be useful and the more ways you can use it, the better.

I wonder how many skills I have that are just “rusting away”, or like a muscle is only being used in a certain way. I want to stretch myself and feel myself ache because I’ve moved in a new way.

In a way, this goal fulfils itself because I think it’s a great way to exercise my creativity.
