A smile is the easiest way to make someone happy, and its also the cheapest way. You never know what’s behind the mask everyone puts on to protect their very selves from the world. People you thought may be very happy and sucessfull may actually be very tired, sad or even suicidal. You never know! A smile can help so much. I know I feel much better when other people is smiling to me. It means they are friendly and they look at me as a nice person (for most of the time, there is people who can fake smiles.. but dont care about them). Many people have a bad self-confidence.. It could help many people to get trough the day much easier if you give them a smile. Smile to everyone who meets your eye(dont go around smiling ALL the time, people will just think you are crazy if you do)! In return you may get lots of smiles back, and maybe YOUR day will be a little better too. :-)

So, I made eye contact with an older gentleman at the mall a few days ago.

    I gave a polite(small)smile.

    He just stared at me.

And though I know I’ll probably never see him again, or anyone else that this happens with, the thought of a repeat really unnerves me.

Don't think just do it 2 years ago

At first I thought I was making a totally fool of myself by doing this but then I started to realize that when I acted that way, people also treated me better, more kindly, friendly.
It’s really amazing the power that a simple smile can have!
Smile, and the world smiles back at you.

Don’t let the few people discourage you gang, if people don’t smile back it’s because of their own insecurities, so don’t let that hinder you from being curtious. I work with the public alot, and let me tell you it’s MUCH easier to aid or even just be around someone who will greet you with a smile, so keep trying…if I did it you can too!

Seems to make life more pleasurable for 80% and scares the other 20%. Included in the 20% today was the train psycopath…. was not impressed. On the other hand the sight of my toothy grin with plastic sword (see be more patiennt goal) in hand could possibly be a worrying sight for anyone. I’m sure our wonderful Met Police have shot people for less.

people often suggest that i smile more; not that i dont smile but i usually reserve the smiles for jokes, funny stories, ironies, and hellos to friends; i always thought that was good enough but i guess not ‘cause everyone tells me to smile more; when im doing random things… but wont i look stupid/special/ crazy??

This is harder than I thought. Did the smile thing (and even a few hellos or hi’s) while walking in the park and was surprised at the number of people who averted their eyes. Did they think I figured out their dirty secret? Are they uber-shy? Do they think that I am some sort of friendly serial killer? Or is this a paranoid New Jersey thing? Hmmmmm. Let’s see how my subjects respond tomorrow.
