How to get flood insurance
How I did it: I got scared. A friend's house had been sliced in two during a freak tornado. I live by a brook, and weather events seem so unpredictable these days....
I called my car insurance provider and said I needed a new home insurance policy and while they were at it could I get flood insurance, too, and they said, "okay," and, "address?" and "how do you want to pay? online?" and I said, "credit card, right away," because it was much less expensive than I'd expected when doing preliminary research, in the neighborhood of $300, and I didn't want to forget or lose a paper bill.
So then they said, "your provider is ABC and your policy number is 123 and it will take effect on August 14th."
I felt dizzy afterward, it was that quick and easy.
Lessons & tips: If your home is by a blubbering brook, a clamoring creek, a simpering swamp, a well-intentioned wetland, an outdated storm drain system or even a newly installed parking lot... well, then there's no excuse - get it before you regret it.

Anais Finn caught herself a big one
how high the creek got the other day…lapping against the foundation! Big logs coming downstream like battering rams, aimed right at the place.
Why have I not taken out flood insurance yet? Like many things on this list, writing it down sort of feels like I’ve done something. But actually doing it would feel different….
