I made apple butter! I feel like I deserve a merit badge for that alone, but I’ll settle for the self-satisfaction I feel every time I look at the jars.

I’ll admit that the apple butter doesn’t taste like what I buy in the store: it’s better. I taste apple-real apple-not just spices. I used granny smith apples, with one rogue braeburn thrown in.

Water bath canning in my stock pot, with a folded kitchen towel for a rack and good tongs and a waterproof oven mitt standing in for a jar lifter.

I’ve asked for a canning kit for Christmas, but I may buy myself one before then!
