How to learn to play bass

Entries

Project 1 week ago

The last few days KG and I have worked on recording a song, KG playing the guitar and I am playing the bass and singing. So far I can’t sing well as I play, so we’ll have to record the vocals seperately.

This has been a tiresome little project when I once again feel kicked back into the beginner’s stage in playing. I feel like the song doesn’t suit me, maybe we’ll have to choose another one – or maybe I’ll just have to practise more : )

Stuart & the Ave 3 weeks ago

It’s been a while since I played, mainly because my son and I missed a rock concert we were looking forward to and it made me a little depressed. I didn’t really feel like playing.

But tonight it was time again. I was thinking of repeating songs I’ve been playing earlier, but in the end I learned a great deal of Green Day’s “Stuart and the Ave” plus repeated old songs.

It seems like I’ve reached a new level in my playing. I learn quicker, I play faster and I am having more fun. It’s such a relief to have passed the first difficult stages.

This might not seem like a very important goal, but it’s a dream coming true and playing makes me happy. It’s cool to be able to express myself with an instrument and the bass is totally right for me.

If you’ve ever been thinking about doing this, give it a try! It’s so fun!

Big step forward 1 month ago

New bass session with The Kind Guy and this time everything worked like a dream. I played Green Day’s Jesus of Suburbia which is a song I really like, and I think that had a positive impact on my playing. This is the first time I have been able to fully relax and enjoy playing. It was such a great feeling!

My impatience is my problem 1 month ago

I played again last night, I learned Green Day’s “When I come around”. I’ve been practicing a little on this one earlier too, so I didn’t learn the whole song at once. It went reasonblay well although I have some problems with the rhythm. I thought I had a good sense of rhythm, but it is obviously not that easy : )

I sometimes get instructions from a kind guy and I am afraid I am stretching his patience since I sometimes get these attacks of frustration and negativity when things don’t go too well. I shouldn’t behave like that when someone is so kind and have this patience with me. I must try to maintain a more positive attitude – especially since I really love to play. I can’t expect that I will be doing great without lots and lots of practicing.

A relaxed session 2 months ago

Eminem’s “Stan” was on my playlist tonight. The bass is very relaxed in this song and I enjoyed playing it. It feels great to notice I make progress.

I am still working on this! 2 months ago

I have played now and then the last few months. I got a little sidetracked for a while because I started singing more too. But now I am practicing again. It’s fun but I still get frustrated when I don’t learn as quickly as I would like to. I started to learn Green Day’s Sassafras Roots tonight. I’ll have to play more regularly, it’s the only way to get really good. How cool would it be to be able to play in a band?

It just fits. I’ve been working on guitar for so many years, on and off, but I think bass comes more naturally. Besides, it’s much easier to find folks to play with if you play bass than if you show up as the seventh guitar!

redlamp asks, “I'm having difficulties strumming the bass with my fingers. It seems I have to clip my nails constantly in order to play otherwise my nails will make a twanging sound as I strum (pick?) at the strings. Any suggestions on how to go about this properly?”
