India, South America, Asia…I don’t really mind where, though Women’s Empowerment India is the one that appeals the most.
I basically hate my job, am unfulfilled in my life and much as I’d like to just run away and trot round the world having a great time it strikes me as somehow spoilt and indulgent. By taking a volunteering holiday I get to experience a new culture and make a contribution along the way. Great experience in every sense, physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally and something brilliant to take to future employers about.

How I did it: I was sponsored through my church to go and help with the local missionaries living there. Many Spanish parents send their kids to summers camps and I worked with the kids that wanted to learn English. At the time I knew no spanish, but was able to teach through hand gestures and role playing. Read how I did it…
How I did it: I had an english teaching internship here in France. It was definitely a challenge. What surprised me about this goal, is I made a goal to volunteer "abroad" and I ended up doing it the longest in a Western country! I have, however, also volunteered in Costa Rica, planting trees, building turtle hatcheries, and painting schools. Read how I did it…

I am thinking about going to Shenzen to volunteer, I will learn more about the program soon.
It’s to build homes.
I found this website called G.A.P Adventures, and they have some volunteer opportunities.
I just don’t know which to go to first…? Costa Rica, Ecuador, India, or Africa?

Volunteering makes me happy, and have always wanted to travel around the globe…seems like a win-win situation.
I’m planning on doing six months in Chile next year! I’m thinking of taking a semester off of University for this, though my friends and parents think that’s a terrible idea. But I feel that if I wait until after university, I’ll be paying off my loans so I’ll need a job then and volunteering isn’t the best option… and I think that I just need to go. I’m studying abroad in England right now, and being away makes me appreciate the world. I’m thinking of going with Mondo Challenge, a UK based company. It’s not that expensive, definately check it out! It’s only 3000$ for six months!!!!

I’m thinking an organic farm in Greece (not totally sold on the place yet) for this summer.
Aiming for summer 2009…trying to decide on a specific country. Any recommendations and/or advice?
spookie has passed her first year!
I’ve checked out several sites now which organise “voluntourism” trips. They all want money. The most I’ve seen is £1700 for a paltry TWO WEEKS in Romania (followed by an obligatory 2 week “adventure tour”, and far more smallprint than I would ever commit myself to). I found a more reasonable Moldova one for about £800 for a month, and was on the verge of putting a deposit down when I met a new friend at a university function. She has friends in Kiev. They own a small children’s home, and appreciate any time and effort from volunteers.
Progress is being made, emails are being sent, and I am getting very, very optimistic about this.

“Anyone know of a reliable organization for volunteering in South America? I've heard a lot of these organizations are fakes. Thanks!”
