Hooray! This is definitely the best thing I’ve achieved in a very long time – I have two regular, weekly volunteer gigs, both working with at-risk kids (one a gig tutoring average but underachieving inner-city youth so they can get into college prep high schools, and the other mentoring a bright underachieving child). At the moment that’s all I can handle without approaching the spread-to-thin zone, and I’m very happy. These work well for me because they draw on my strengths, and fit into my routine – I sometimes wish I was less of a routine-oriented person so I could do the volunteer for hours at a time on the fly thing again, but that took so much out of me and I’m so busy and prone to stress when facing any kind of uncertain… lol… too neurotic, in short. But this is lovely and I was lucky to find these opportunities and recommend them happily and wholeheartedly.

Hooray!
Yesterday I interviewed for a mentoring program – it’ll be July before I’m matched with a kid because fingerprinting and background checks and references apparently take a while.
And week after next I’m going on a sort of community service rocks so do it retreat sponsored by the Jesuits. I love the Jesuits, I really do, and I’m not even Catholic. I went to Jesuit school for a while, and I really love their “men and women for others” angle.
So, anyway, hopefully that yields some good volunteering opp.s as well.
tonight checking out the meet and match from these people: www.womenoncall.org. yay! I love that they advertise the event for busy, professional women who don’t have time to look for ops… it’s like speed-dating, only a volunteer fair.
