One step closer to that theory of everything

Thesis Paper 2 years ago

I had to understand about string theory as part of research for one of my thesis papers.

Definitely worth doing; interesting stuff!

Just bought TheElegant Universe 2 years ago

By Brian Greene. The book is supposed to be a great introduction to string theory. It was also a finalist for the Pulitzer. I’ve never yet found a book that won the Pulitzer that I could bear to read. We’ll see…

read " a short history of nearly everything " instead 2 years ago

it's simple, really 3 years ago

I think I get it now.

Everything is made of a bunch of very very small vibrating strings. Once you believe this, you can conclude some interesting facts, like the existence of several extra dimensions that too are too tiny to be seen. If we are lucky the Hadron collider will be ready in 2010 that could confirm a bit of what string theory predits.

For up to date research material, visit http://arxiv.org/ and search for “string theory”.

Ah, Nova... 3 years ago

Best show on the planet, IMO. I recommend “The Elegant Universe” if you’ve got the time to watch it, since the animations are awesome. Your head will be spinning afterward, but it’s cool to think about stuff like extra dimensions and parallel universes.

The line between facts and belief 4 years ago

Whenever I look into the things that mathematicians and physists know to be true – I am astounded that I can’t actually know them to be true in the same way – I’m left at their mercy. I have to take their word for it. If they wanted to band together and create a big hoax – they could and we couldn’t question it – because it has gone so far beyond our intuitive ability to understand. I wonder if in ancient times, this is what priests were to laymen – people who had discovered something through aptititude and deep study that other people couldn’t understand. Like shamans who shape shifted. String theory might end up supporting the idea that a person, tuning into the right subatomic frequencies, could become a panther. I’m awed and humbled by these ideas and my pea-brain attempts and making sense of them.
