Frankie Says Relax 15 months ago

I’ve been placing a horrendous amount of pressure on myself and I suddenly realized the other day that yes, I will eventually have to pay another 75 quid to renew my provisional—but I do not own a car, cannot afford to buy a car, cannot afford the petrol to drive a car, and cannot even afford to park a damn car so really this is a deadline I can push way way back and give myself some breathing room.

Also, technically, I left the country in February, so that gives me until next february that if I HAD to drive I could do so under my US license.

The goal stays on my list, though.

have started carrying the code book with me, loaded the software onto my laptop (again) and have emailed my friend for the name of their driving instructor. Because I’ve been driving for over 20 years, I wasn’t going to use the instructor except for one or two confirmation lessons to make sure I was doing ok on this side of the car/road. But I’ve realized that I am going to need some practice time in an actually automobile, of which I do not own one. I wonder how many hours they’ll say I need before I’m ‘ready’?

where does the time go? 18 months ago

time, I need more time! I keep putting this task off and now September is fast approaching and I really REALLY don’t want to pay to renew my provisional, I’d rather sit for the damn test. Maybe I need some subliminal motivation:

Countdown 20 months ago

okay, I’ve been putting this one on the backburner for over a year now and the time has come to make this a priority. My sisters are going to visit in July and while I could probably get away with renting a car and using my US license, for the cost of a rental I could just buy myself a perfectly decent used car for which a UK licence is necessary.

I’m gonna enter this goal onto my Gold Star Chart.

can't believe it, but i passed on my first try! 21 months ago

I haven’t been this nervous since my first job interview – i was afraid to tell anyone I even had the test because I was so sure I would fail. I had a disastrous ride over with my instructor, but then somehow, miraculously, managed to focus during the test and didn’t screw up in a major way. Only one mark off for putting my turn signal on too late. Still find driving here a bit stressful compared to the US, but so glad I did this, it’s one of the things I’ve accomplished that I’m most proud of!

How on earth did I blag my way through that? 2 years ago

Or so said my driving instructor who said she would be surprised if I passed.

Not bothered… at long last, I can wreak havoc on the roads ont la grande bretagne again!

Date is set! 2 years ago

I’m taking lessons with BSM. Pfft. Everytime I have a lesson my instructor says at least once that I would have failed the test for this or that… I have very little confidence that I’m actually going to pass… But, that being said, the date of the test is set and steadily approaching…

Code Change 2 years ago

I’m so close to getting this goal and then they announced the other day the release of a new Highway Code. Futhermucker! I can’t believe they are calling it the “2007” when it is nearly the end of the year. Could they not wait until January 1st and make it the 2008 edition?

To drive or not to drive, there is no question. 2 years ago

Imagine the horror – I’ve had my US license for 12 years. And I move to another country and find out that I have to do it all over again.

People here are quirky. In America, most everyone gets their license at 16. Here, craploads of people don’t get theirs until they are well into their adulthood. The tests also appear to be about twenty times harder than in America. I’ve never known someone to screw up the written or the practical test there.

Though I guess that’s not hard – it’s like ‘If you are driving and see a bunch of children crossing the road, should you:

A) speed up

B) drive at the same speed but beep your horn

C) slow down and try not to kill anyone’

But so many people here fail BOTH tests. Nice. All hail public transport for now.
