I saw some good reviews on Railhead Smoke so since we were sort of in the Ft. Worth area, we stopped by there.
However, Texas BBQ review gave it 3.5 on the ribs, sauce, and sides, meaning it is on the better than average side, but does not match some of the reviews I saw.
They have a ribs plate, but was not a complete half-slab. For $9.80 for the rib plate and not a complete half-slab, it seems other places with half slabs for about $1 more is a better value.
The ribs themselves were tender with lots of meat. However, the ribs and sauce was a bit salty.
The sides (beans, cole slaw, and potato salad) were good. Unlike what the paper sign posted on the wall says, you only get to pick two ouf of three.
- Baked potato- Good but it was sort of make it yourself toppings. They give you some butter, a packet of sour cream, and a container of cheese for you to put on yourself. No other toppings like bacon or chives. Most places allow you to substitute a baked potato for your sides, but this place does not.
- Other sides (potato salad, beans, cole slaw) – OK
- Bread – One slice of white bread
- Ribs – Good, tender, good amount of meat, but salty.
On a side note, their brisket looked good… So perhaps now that we’ve tried the ribs at the Ft. Worth location, we can try the brisket at a closer location. 5 years ago
is located south of downtown (south of I-30) but within a very short distance of City Hall. However, if you are leery about driving in certain neighborhoods, you may feel safer going there during daytime hours. Anyway, they are only open to about 6 pm on weekdays, 6:45 pm on Friday & Saturday and closed on Sundays.
Texas BBQ Review gave this place a 4.5 on ribs and 4.5 on sides and 4.5 on sauce.
This seems to be a mom & pop place, nothing fancy.
Baby Back Shak: $10.95 half-slab plate (There is also a “rib plate” for $9.00. I assume this has fewer ribs than the half slab.)
- Baked potato – Good. If you ask for a baked potato at most places, it usually counts as two sides. It counted as one side here, but they basically give you half of a baked potato. It was still a very big portion and was not dry at all.
- Bread – Simply 3 slices of white bread
- “Shak” beans – Very good. Baked beans which tasted more like something from a very good chili rather than just plain baked beans. As the person at the counter called it, “The good stuff…”
- Potato salad – So so
- Buttered corn – So so
- Ribs – Very good. The ribs had a really good portion of meat on them and tasted like they were grilled over charcoal. This may be incorrect, but it just seemed to have that type of taste about them. They were very tender. The sauce had a bit of a bite to it.
I would still have to say that despite the last visit, Texas Land and Cattle is still #1 with Houston’s close as well… But this place is not far behind. I am sure I’ll be going back. It’s just a little far from where I live though. 5 years ago
I thought the ribs at Sugar Baby BBQ were just as good, if not better, than North Main BBQ. Sugar Baby BBQ also had a wider selection of sides. However, they didn’t necessarily look like anything special.
Had dinner at Houston’s last night. I had been to Houston’s in the DC area maybe once or twice, but there was nothing which really made it stand out. However, I also had not tried ribs there either until last night. I guess Houston’s tries to be a bit upscale. What led me to this conclusion? (1) They had at least 3 people up front whose responsibility was to seat people, (2) they asked one guy to remove his cap, and (3) the prices!
$26 for the rib dinner… $3 for an 8 oz bottle of Dr. Pepper.
The dinner did not come up bread or a dinner salad unlike Texas Land and Cattle. Anyway, regarding the quality of the food:
- Ribs – Very good. Very tender and the meat basically slid off the bone.
- Baked potato – large with lots of toppings, but a little dry.
- Cole slaw – Very good
The ribs between Houston’s and Texas Land and Cattle are a toss up. I’d probably have to go back to TLC to remind myself how they were. 6 years ago
Not quite what I expected. They offer a buffet for $12.
The beef brisket seemed pretty tender, the ribs had a lot of meat on them. However, the taste of the ribs at a Texas BBQ place is quite different than that of Tony Roma’s.
The sides were really nothing to write home about… Not bad, but nothing special. Choices were limited too to potato salad, beans, and coleslaw. Bread was store-bought sliced loaves.
This is a good place if you want to go to a buffet for an inexpensive price. If you want the whole experience, though, which includes good sides and good bread, then this doesn’t seem to be the place. 6 years ago
We wanted to try North Main BBQ… but noone told us that they are closed Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays (and Sundays only open until 4 pm)! Ugh!
Ended up going to Colter’s. I think it’s been approximately 15-20 years since I’ve been to Colter’s.
Ribs weren’t bad… $17.95 for full slab of baby back ribs
Sauce – Could have been better.
Baked potato – Loaded!
Rolls – Could have been better. Corn bread muffins were good, though.
Other sides (cole slaw, potato salad) – Average at best
Overall, I would say Colter’s not a bad place if you really have the urge for some ribs… However, I could imagine there are better places. 6 years ago
Chili’s was, ummm, how to put it… bad. Very dry, not much meat… It could be just a bad day or bad place, but when you cannot get consistently good quality, I don’t want to spend my money on not knowing whether it will be good or not…
Texas Land and Cattle: $16.99 full slab, $10.99 half slab.
Spicy caesar salad – Good
Hot bread – Very good
Garlic mashed potatoes – Very good (if you like LOTS of garlic)
Ribs – Very good…
There wasn’t a choice of sauce and the sauce was a little spicy. The amount of meat seemed reasonable and it was tender. It’s too bad that Tony Roma’s is not in Dallas anymore because it just SEEMS that there was a lot more meat on ribs at Tony Roma’s… but not sure if now we’re just putting Tony Roma’s on a pedestal and in reality, it wasn’t as good as we remembered, but I’m pretty sure Tony Roma’s ribs had lots more meat. 6 years ago
I have to find the best rib place in Dallas… It’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it.
Based on some Internet searches, here are some candidates:
- North Main BBQ in Euless, although I have heard they try to give the better ribs to regulars or those who know the “secret handshake”... I am not keen on businesses that treat different customers differently.
- Bakers BBQ
- Sonny Bryan’s (original location)
- Houston’s (even though this is a chain, some people seem to swear by it… and to be fair, Tony Roma’s is a chain, too)
- Baby Back Shak
- Mac’s BBQ
- Sugar Baby BBQ
- Peggy Sue BBQ
- Fred’s BBQ
- Texas Land and Cattle
Also, some people seemed to really like Bone Daddy’s but I don’t know if the atmosphere clouded their opinion.
