Not exactly “cross-country”, but we meandered through the southwest for two weeks. It was great! I have the travelling bug for sure.
How to go on a cross country road trip
How I did it: My cousin and I planned our 3 month cross country road trip about 2 years in advance - and let me tell you, no one thought we were actually going to do it. The day we left shocked them all. We had one bag each, a map of the United States, and a list of several key places we wanted to hit and we just went. We spent nights with our widespread family and friends, various cheap hotels, and even tried a bit of camping in Utah (we made it one night with the scorpions and the mutant spiders). It was the trip of a lifetime.
Lessons & tips: Be prepared to eat A LOT of fast food! No time or place to cook while you're on the road, you just have to grab what's quick and go. I have to say there are some really cozy mom and pop shops along Route 66 heading west though. Also, safety first. We encountered a lot of creeps on the trip, but as long as you have your head on straight, you'll be fine.
Resources: We used my cousin's Toyota and it was hands down the best car for the job. Maps were a definite, and a back up GPS for when we got really lost in the middle of the desert. The last would be a good credit card, the trip got rather expensive.

my trip has been delayed until the middle of sept, and my mom won’t let us borrow her car after all. It’ll still work out, but it’s not perfect. We’ll go though! And leaf-peep like hell!
I got $1000 as a gift for graduation! This means I plan on leaving for my awesome road trip adventure in approximately 1 month! I have, total, including credit, $1200 to spend right now. Renting a car will be up to $800, so even split with my boyfriend that’s a lot of moolah.
October is the soonest I can save the money to actually do this. I need around 1500 dollars, assuming my boyfriend really wants to go. I’ve always wanted to take a long road trip, and this is the time!
My mom and I used to do this every summer when I was in school – her business is seasonal. We live in Tennessee & would go through Texas, Arizona, New Mexico – she knew all the cool places to camp (some haunted-awesome) & places in the cities to find the best shopping. We would go north through yellowstone & return that way. She knew how to take all the back roads so it was very scenic. One year we took my grandmother, another year my aunt, infant cousin, & granny. Those were the days & I didn’t even know it.
Now working full time & everyone is so busy, it just hasn’t happened – in YEARS. So it’s my goal & I’m gonna make it happen.
