"By far, easier than I thought!"
How I did it: I thought about giving up red meat for awhile before actually taking the plunge. I thought it would be a difficult lifestyle change, or make me feel "different" than my friends/family, but it has been SO easy! Poulty is nearly always a menu option, even at a steakhouse, or McDonalds. I have always loved animals, and I can not bring myself to watch the videos of cattle slaughter that drive some people towards this decision. I have a general understanding that it is a brutal process, and I don't need the specifics. However, choosing to give up red meat out of love for animals is just ONE reason behind my choice. The cattle industry is the #1 contributer to greenhouse gases. Beef farming and production are notoriousy bad for our environment. ...and, it is an inefficient process! The amount of grain needed each year to feed cattle for beef production could satisfy the WORLD's hunger 5 times over. Doing research, and basing my decison on facts about human health, nutrition requirements, humane practices, environmentally friendly behavior AND the desire to see the Earth's resources used more efficiently to feed an ever-growing population helped make this an easier choice for me.
Lessons & tips: Research. You really own your decision when you do the research and draw your own conclusion. Don't go for the gross-out factor, and watch animals being slaughtered. Why put yourself through that? You can give up red meat without becoming an extremist. Do it for yourself, and be aware that it is your choice. If other people are interested, offer to them the knowledge you've gained, but don't force your choice on friends and family. If it is the right decison for other people, they will come to it on their own. Be happy in the knowledge that you have done a good thing for yourself, and the world.
Resources: The internet. Research the idea until you feel ready to make your decision. For some it may take a day, for others it may take several months. When you are ready, you will know. Read what is out there.
