play in a string quartet

I have looked into joining a small community orchestra. I think they’re more like a baroque chamber orchestra. Possibly just strings, I’m not entirely sure. So this is a step towards the string quartet goal. Or it might even replace the string quartet goal, but somehow I doubt it. There’s been no other ensemble that I’ve played in that has been as fun as the string quartet.

...then there would always be time and people to play with! There is no better reason to play. If there happens to be anyone in the Jacksonville area… But there go those wishes again.

I play regularly with a quartet, but only for our own enjoyment. It is the most wonderful way to make music, with a small group of friends, working on the repertoire and getting it to sound like we want. Experimenting with different interpretations, and discussing different ways of approaching the music.

And what a wonderful diverse and vast repertoire there is for quartets. From Haydn to Shostakovich and everything in between.

You’ve not really played music until you’ve played chamber music.

this is one of the most enjoyable things i ever did with my viola playing. unfortunately after leaving school we all drifted in our own directions. but when i get home i’d like to find some cool people who play the right instruments and try again.

I put a message on Craigslist and someone actually wrote me!
Apparently there’s an amateur string orchestra that practices on Wednesdays and lots of the members get together to play in smaller groups.
Now I just have to work up the nerve to go. Ugh, and I HATE taking my cello on the bus.

Not much beats playing in a chamber group. No more waiting for conductor instructions or disagreeing with his decisions. I and the others in my quartet are the decision-makers, the music-makers. There’s so much intimacy in chamber music that’s all but missing in orchestral music.

Look up the Amateur Chamber Music Players directory and find people in your area. You can be matched by skill level and then you can play!
