How I did it:

• Took a vacation day
  
• Left the kids with my husband
  
• Went 100 miles away from my familiar home territory (went to San Francisco, CA)
  
• Went to the zoo, the beach and also hung out in the city
  
• Made sure I had fully charged batteries
  
• Brought lots of film (this was pre-digital)
  
• Started out well before sunrise - stopped shooting only after sunset
  
• Tried to take at least 3 or 4 shots of everything - some vertical, some horizontal, close up, wide angle, etc.

Lessons & tips:

• This should be much cheaper with a digital camera
  
• Digital will also give instant gratification
  
• Even though digital is great, there are still some nuances that only come across with film
  
• You should do this more than once a decade
  
• Bring a tripod, even if it is a hassle to haul around
  
• Laptop and aircard for the digital age would be good
  
• If you are SLR, of course, bring all your lenses, filters and etc.
  
• If you think you might use the photos professionally, bring pre-printed model release forms
  
• Try "seeing" from as many angles and view points that you can think of - don't just take the "traditional" shot
