I’m actually learning how to play scales competently for the first time! And surprisingly, my fingertips are toughening up already. The human body is an amazing thing.

It’s a beaut, and I want to get as much as I can out of it.
I’ve been away from the guitar for awhile. As a result, I’ve lost a lot of my calluses and also my finger strength. Thankfully not my dexterity, but…anyway. The first thing to do is to build up strength and calluses again.
When I first picked up the guitar 10 years ago, I just wanted to be able to strum along and I wasn’t too concerned with technique. Now, I’d like to be able to branch out from the standard open chords and to be able to play cleanly. I’d also like to be able to play barre chords properly.
What I’m doing right now, then, is picking out songs that are fairly basic with a few weird chords mixed in. David Bowie songs seem to be really good for this, as a lot of them are piano-based…most of the chords are familiar, but he always throws in a few that are easy to play on the piano and more challenging on the guitar.
