How I did it: I've been going regularly for cleanings every six months for about 5 years now but when I found out that I had to get two crowns (my first ever) and fillings, I kind of freaked out. I put off going for nearly 8 months and then finally made the appointements. Read how I did it… 4 days ago

How I did it: I exhausted our health savings account (very untimely due to the fact that we conceived a baby in the meantime) and had to take out a loan for $2,000 additional and I am still not done; I need to have my wisdom teeth removed but I cannot afford it.
Here's the rundown:
Dentist appt., first in a series of cleanings, crowns and root canals; fun.
I wanted to get as much potential recovery pain out of the way as possible before school starts. 2nd appt completeRoot canal, ugh. 3rd and 4th appt.’s scheduled; more root canals. Crowns and fillings to come, yay. 3rd dent appt completeStarted 2nd root canal! They’re not nearly as excruciating, so far, as ones I’ve had in the past. 2 more root canal sessions to go before crowns and fillings begin- yay. 4th Dent appt downFinished up 1st root canal. Now I need to make a periodontist appt before I can go back to my general dentist for crowns/fillings. Amazing how little pain there has been so far. Made periodontist appt1st evaluation is the day after my final root canal. If I get an ok from the periodontist then I’ll be able to start my regimin my general dentist but I bet that I’ll need some kind of treatment beforehand. Done w/ root canals! Or so I thought...Thank goodness. 7 months ago Made deep-cleaning apptThey give you lots of injections for this procedure. My wife said she almost passed out, but I have to do this to get my crowns. It is three weeks away and then I finally get to go back to my general pract’r for a check-up and reassessment of the game plan. Glad to have the root canals behind me at least. 6 months agoMonday 2:45Periodontist appt. aka swallowing needles:Whoa! Who knew a teeth cleaning could be more excrutiating than a root canal!? The part where he drove a three-inch needle deep into each jaw muscle was the most pleasant. Glad its over though.
Now I go to my Gen Dent (finally) and I’m pretty sure I’ll need my lower wisdoms out and quite a few cavities filled. At least soon I’ll be able to know that I’m caught up on all my dentistry other than checkups.9th Dentist appt downI’m have even gotten used to the anesthetic shots at this point. I am totally finished with one ‘quadrant’ and I think I’ll only have 2-3 more appts left.
I should have named this goal ‘Go to the dentist’ since that’s all I have done so far but I tried and 43T wouldn’t let me, oh well.
I’m really bored with dentists and I’ll be glad when I’m just going in twice a year for checkups with NO drills or shots! 10th Dent apptPrep for a crown. Crown goes on Feb 1st. Don’t know if I have cavities on that side.11th appt comes w/ bad newsJust found out I have to do two emergency root canals on Monday. That makes a total of four. Then my wisdom teeth have to come out! There’s no money left in the health savings account and my insurance only covers like 10 percent. Very demoralizing. 12th appt in 6 mos!<---more exasperated than excited......and guess what, I still have at least 8 more to go (3 more for the root canals + 4 visits to build/set crowns + I for sure have to have my wisdoms out), that will be 20 visits in all! Well, at least I am over half way there.
Maybe I should have taken better care of my teeth, or not eaten so much refined sugar? Lucky thirteethYay, only two more Monday morning root canals to go! I need to begin collecting and compiling the bills from my various dental offices so that I can figure out the sum total of all charges and try to discern whether or not anything is reimbursable; I doubt it. 14-Start of final root canalI am such a regular a the endodontist now that it’s a little embarrassing. These Monday morning root canals have been a real trial for my ‘control my anger’ goal but I’m managing. 15th, Last root canal (hopefully for life) is done!I won’t miss them, or the daytime TV that’s always droning in the background; even though I did learn 10 ways to bust stress in less than a minute from Dr. Oz this morning, so I guess that’s good. Got a loan to finish upNeeded a few more thousand dollars to get crowns put on my open root canals. I went to a site called Care Credit that is specifically designed for the purposes of meeting medical costs. It said I got approved so I went ahead and made my appts to take place over Spring Break.Missed my Spring Break appt.Rescheduling now.16th appt scheduled840 am Friday. The good thing is that I probably won’t have to pay interest on the loan, at least if I can pay it back within a year. Had the last two crowns put into placeNo shots, no pain. I still have to have those two pesky wisdom teeth extracted but that’s not gonna happen for at least a year and at that time it will be under its on goal, so this one is done! I had the permanent crown “installed” (LOL, I don’t know the correct dental terminology) on Apr. 28. It wasn’t painful at all and now I can chew on that side of my mouth again. Then I had prep work done on my second crown. I go back in another week to have that one finished . . . and then I’m done! Whew! 2 weeks ago

Yesterday was my first appointment of many to have the work done. This appointment was a filling and prep work for a crown. I now have a temporary crown on and will go back at the end of the month to have that one completed and my other crown started.
Of course it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. The numbing gel that was applied to my gums prior to the shot of novicane is amazing – I didn’t feel the prick of the needle at all.
I’m always tense when the drilling begins – I worry and anticipate the pain of the drill. That pain never happend – thank goodness! I was able to relax after a few minutes (sort of – I will probably never fully relax while in the dentist chair!).
In and out in just an hour but $218 poorer with another $100 or so to pay at my next appointment on the 29th. 1 month ago

Experienced professional dentists in Calgary are probably the best! Just a little FYI. 1 month ago

I had a lot of dental work done as a child and I think I was a bit traumatized by it all. I absolutely hate going to the dentist but for the last five years I’ve stuck to my twice a year routine cleanings like clockwork. At my last appointment I was told I needed a filling and two crowns – my first crowns ever. This is terrifying to me and for various reasons I put off the appointments to have them done.
This morning I went in for another cleaning and my hygenist reminded me that I needed to get this done. So I finally bucked up and set the appointments – the first one is April 11 (after my trip/bro’s wedding). I’ll be happy when this is over.
And what’s funny is that I know it’s all mental – that the procedure won’t be as bad as I make it out to be in my head . . . but I just dread it so! 2 months ago

I went and saw David the other day. Really great. I think I’ve reached a turning point in my life; I want to take better care of myself now. :) I used to be scared of the dentist but now I feel worthy of the treatment and like I can afford it. Maybe they are the same thing? Either way it’s a great feeling :)
I’m going to mark this as done! but it’s a lifelong thing… so it stays. 2 months ago
