The Mook is getting a little brother this weekend!! 3 months ago

The Mook finally told us her name.. because she is so mouthy – very vocal, loves to eat, and loves to bite, she is now The Mook. “Mook” is Bangla for “mouth,” so it is fitting.

Anyway, after going camping this weekend, we are going to pick up a little brother for her to chomp on.

And just because I want to post another picture of her, here is The Mook, playing in a bowl Shannon’s parents got us as a wedding gift.

I have a new friend, and my friend has no name. 4 months ago

    The other night, Syed disappeared.

When he came home, he had a little baby girl in tow, and plans to get her a playmate in a few weeks.

She is nameless because she has yet to tell us her name.. Syed thinks that maybe she just won’t have a name, but I don’t know how I feel about that.

Anyway, she is snuggled under the blankets next to me, so I suppose I can consider this goal halfway accomplished.

Here kitty, kitty, kitty! 5 months ago

For almost all of my life I have had pets.

After Buddy and Molly, my ancient labrador retrievers, passed away last year, I found myself for the first time without any animals in my life. Sure, my mom adopted two awesome kittens, but they aren’t mine..

Syed and I have been talking about getting a beast for a while. We fostered a dog, and through that experience a few months ago, learned that the cave is not big enough for the two of us plus a larger beast. That and dogs, or at least our foster dog, require a LOT of work.

Sadly, Syed is allergic to cats. Like allergic to the point where his lips are swelling up and he has difficulty breathing.

After doing some research, including some fieldwork to visit Cornish Rex kitties in Michigan, we have concluded that certain cats do not trigger his allergies.

We have located some possible places to adopt from, and are planning on adopting a pair of kittens soon after the wedding next month.

    I cannot wait!

Well, I adopted one kitten. There were only two kittens in the mobile adoption van, two darling littermates, and I wanted them both, but one of them was in the process of being adopted, so I took the other one. And he is so precious and lovely. What a wise decision, I have no idea why I waited so long. Now I am thinking about adopting another one so they can keep each other company when I am at work, but my kitten seems content enough as it is, and he might get territorial if I introduce someone new. It would be one thing if they were littermates, or if I adopted them around the same time, but my kitten has his run of the house now. I don’t want to upset him. I’m sure he would get used to a new kitten, but I would only get another one for him, and if he is happy by himself, then I am fine with just him.

but the shelter that I want to adopt from only lets people adopt kittens if they’re not going to be the only pet in the house. This dumbfounded me for a second, then I realized it makes perfect sense. Solely in terms of the psychological development of the kitten and so that he/she grows up socialized and doesn’t become a “brat cat.” I was always raised with cats and kittens and there were always a few around, so any time there was a baby, there were others to play with, run around with, and learn from. So I totally agree with their rule, and when I can, will adopt two.

But recently, my boyfriend talked to our landlord and apparently we can’t have cats in the apartment. I was pretty heartbroken at first, but have come to accept it. I took this goal off immediately when he first told me this news, but then I put it back up because I know that when we eventually move, (who knows when, we’re pretty content now but things may change in the future), we will move to a place that allows cats in the apartments and I can fulfill this goal. Until then, though, I think I will volunteer at this particular kitty shelter, just so I can get my fix of pet/kitty lovin’ that I miss so very much.
