How I did it: I saw one in a Charity shop. A man donated it whilst I was making a donation. I was too scared to ask how much they wanted for it, as it was still in the stock room.So I went to get my haircut, then after my haircut I came back to the charity shop to buy a CD. The lady at the till didn't have enough change for my £10 note, so she sent me out to buy a chocolate bar to get change.Because I'd done her a favour, I felt confident enough to ask… Read how I did it…
How I did it: I found a crappy portable for $3 and it brought back such vivid memories of learning to type on a manual that I took it with me everywhere and typed on it until I wore the little life left in it out. Then I started looking for them while I was in thrift stores poking around. I happen to get lucky a few times and now I have a really nice Olympia SM-9 that I use all the time. Read how I did it…

“hello world” – said the typewriter
my beautiful olympia typewriter, we will spend many sleepless nights together
I couldn’t find one in the style/price range I was looking for around town, so I went to craigslist naturally. There was nothing for sale, but I posted a “wanted add”. The next day someone responded and I got just what I was looking for for only $50! yay! I got a smith corona galaxie twelve- two tone blue from the seventies.
Ideally, I would have like a red royal, but those run for like $300, or less if they aren’t in working order or if by some stroke of luck you find one at a garage sale. I really really like my new smith corona, and encourage you to look outside your ideal.
I’m giving up on this now with the intent to do it later. There are other things I want to put up and I don’t have room for a writing corner where I live now. When I have a bigger place (with an office) I’ll put this back on my list.
Meanwhile, I’m going to put forth the added challenge of paying for it with change I don’t spend (yes, I’ll convert it to cash before I actually purchase the typewriter). So for I have about $25 in change.
The total didn’t include shipping, so the grand total is $420, at least as of now.
I found a website where this guy restores old typewriters to working condition and sells them.
From this, I’ve learned that I want a 1935/1936 Royal. I’ve emailed for a quote.
*Edit- He emailed me back (on New Year’s?) The typewriter I like is $395. He has one. Dunno if that includes shipping. Emailed to ask.
I don’t mean one of those you plug in. I mean the kind you power with your hands, like the one in Misery. I love that movie.
If I still want this in another couple of months, I’ll reopen it. But at the moment I just have too much junk.
