How I did it: I went to a local recreation center, and luckily enough, they had a handout listing different volunteer opportunities in the county. I called a few and was able to qualify for a ESL volunteer teaching position. I went through a training session and started teaching the week after.
I had to wait a while though because the program started in September and I was looking to start in August.

I always enjoy volunteering. It makes me feel good. This time, I really enjoyed volunteering because it was a different kind of experience for me in that I was a co-teacher for a class. I learned a lot from my students’ experiences, and the whole process of going to class to teach was somehow informative too. However, I also learned how sometimes volunteer work can be not as efficient/perfect as it could be. I wonder if we were as effective as possible. And as a volunteer, I’m not even sure if I would have had the time to invest more effort into improving the current structure of the program.
Nevertheless it was an informative and “feel-good” experience. I reaffirmed my thought that I do enjoy conversing with people – especially those from different cultures. 3 months ago

As part of a “new me/new life” approach I decided that volunteering as a English teacher to new Canadians would be the best use of my very limited skill set! Unfortunately it’s a bit of a process, as there are police background checks and mandatory training, both for obvious reasons.
A little off-put by having to jump through hoops to volunteer my time, but I understand :) 15 months ago

29 hours for July
40 hours for August – doing inventory!
241.5 hours total! Yeah! I have reached my goal!
Last week I helped with inventory. What a task. Everything had to be pulled from the shelves, scanned in, then replaced! Very physical. Very satisfying to have everything in shelf order though.
After my volunteer time, I am starting as a part-time paid employee, effective today! That’s a bonus! 21 months ago

34.5 hours since I last posted! That brings me to a total of 172.5 hours since I began. With high school graduation and a death in the family of one employee, I worked a couple of times that I would not have normally worked and in return didn’t have to go in on one Tuesday. I worked an 8-hour Saturday. It was fun, actually. :) 23 months ago

I have volunteered 24.5 hours so far this month bringing my total hours to 138.0 hours. I helped set up for the book sale as well as my other duties. I am more proficient at our DVD/CD system and handling its quirks. 1 year ago

I volunteered 17.5 hours, raising my total hours to 113.5 hours. We were closed on Easter Sunday, so I didn’t get any hours for that and I was sick and missed two volunteer days.
This month I worked a little more at the desk than previously. I still shelve books and other media as the main part of my job. 1 year ago
