jellyfishoctopus is off for summer!
I haven’t been here in a while, but Mother’s Day weekend, I got a family of sugar gliders from a girl on CraigsList!!!! There is an adult female and male and a baby female. The baby was soo little when I adopted them; she is now moving in and out of their sleeping pouch and eating on her own. They are really fun, lots of work, and so cute. Definitely a lot of work. Since I have summers off, I am really going to intensively start bonding with them. I also need to get the dad neutered – if anyone knows of a good exotic vet in the DFW Texas area, esp. Arlington area, please let me know!!!
*The pic is the momma checking out her new awesome Stealth Wheel. They love that thing!!
This is another goal for when I finally get settled in Seattle. I originally REALLY wanted a dog, but I’d have to go through the trouble to find an apartment that’ll accept dogs, and I’d feel bad since I’ll be at work all day and have to leave my dog at home. I think want to get 2 sugar gliders so they can keep each other company, but we’ll see how everything works out!
I’ve decided that as cute as they are, I really would not be a good keeper of them.
I’ve been researching and planning for over a year now. Currently I have to wait until either I move to a new place or until my guinea pigs die.
From what I’ve heard and experienced, they’re kinda smelly (like fruit bats) and messy, but at least their mess is relatively easy to clean.
my sister has had a glider for about six months now.. even though it’s hers.. her glider kiwi is awesome to be with and play he has the best personality.. we have a bond together as well not as much as him and my sister but he’ll come to me and let me walk around with the bonding pouch =]
the picture is actually not my sister’s glider but kiwi’s mother that I got to play with.. bonnie =]

Sugar gliders can be wonderful pets, and will live more than a decade if taken care of, but they require a LOT of time and attention. DO NOT get them if you’re wanting a casual pet. Gliders are prone to severe depression if they feel neglected, and will even intentionally hurt themselves because of it. Do research, and lots of it. Their social environment and their diet impact them GREATLY, and if either goes askew it can become dangerous for the poor things. You have to pour a great deal of effort and love in to looking after them- they probably WONT automatically take to you like a Dog or Cat. They can’t be potty trained, and they will bite- very hard. If you aren’t prepared for this level of commitment you should seriously consider having another pet. In the end the rewards are awesome, but it can take gliders minutes to years to finally bond with you. Again, I CAN’T stress it enough- DO RESEARCH before getting gliders.
..to all those who are thinking of getting a sugar glider, do some research beforehand. they are social creatures, and WILL get depressed if they don’t have at least one other sugar glider to live with. They been known to commit some vicious suicides when living alone.
I had a two year old sugar glider for 4-5 months. Unfortunately he wasn’t well socialized with his previous owner and really didn’t take it me like I hoped he would. However I found him a wonderful home with four other gliders recently and he’s doing great! I guess all he needed was a friend.
I finally broke down and bought one today. It was between her and a chinchilla, but she was just too cute to leave. We’ve been bonding for the last 6 hours, after she “glided” into my closet, then hid herself in my clothes.
