I learned on a stick. Very hard but best way to learn.
How to learn how to drive stick
How I did it: I had a chance to get a different truck (I love trucks)---one that I could afford to replace my old one that the transmission broke in.
The only problem was, it was standard. So I considered a car with automatic in the same price range, but cars just aren't the same! So I 'cowgirled up' : ) and decided I was just going to learn to drive standard.
Now, it may sound silly, but the very thought of it scared me. But someone else drove the truck home for me, and all day I practiced right there in the driveway. Back and forth and forth and back. : )
The next day I went a short distance on the road and came home........and after about a week, I was more or less comfortable with it.
Now I wouldn't have an automatic unless it was given to me. I love standards!
Lessons & tips: Don't let fear hold you back from doing something that you really want to do. You'll be surprised how good you feel when you do it anyway in spite of your fear.......and you'll find the added benefit that that particular no longer holds any fear for you.

That is the sole purpose of my desire to learn how to drive stick. I am semi-obsessed with Camaros and want to own one someday.
With all respect to those learning to drive stick (wish I could cheer you all!) I always feel weird that people can’t do it – it’s all I ever learnt. It seems to be rare in England to not drive stick.
Maybe I should have a go learning to drive an automatic! :o)
My dad said that he’d teach me using a rental car for a day…so I wouldn’t mess up anything in the car when I’m learning. I thought it was a very good idea
I know its not a big deal & the chances of this happening are pretty slim, but I always think about what if I was stranded somewhere and the only car around was a stick. or what if I really needed to get somewhere and needed to borrow a car from a friend and they only had a stick.
Something similar recently happened to me in Mexico. It wasn’t an emergency or anything, but we wanted to rent a car to do a little exploring, and the only available was a stick shift. Luckily, my mom knew how to do it, since I had no clue.
In situations like this & life in general, I think its just a good thing to know. but… I have no one to teach me. :(

Seriously…there are more important things that I could do with my time! But, yeah…one day, I’ll learn!

This could be useful in some type of emergency, or if I decide to switch careers and be a Nascar driver.
i’m verrrry impressed by the fact that nearly all the cars in Ireland are manual (i’m told). i once tried to have my dad explain it to me, years back, and very quickly realized its not as easy as just giving an explanation. it will take along time to accomplish this and since i’m not likelyto do this for a long time, i’m going to remove it. but i will keep it in mind if the opportunity presents itself!
