donate books

I dropped off the box of books this morning. There were already alot of books on the donation table, so it looks like others are out there doing it too. It may sound goofy, but I felt like I was a little part of something bigger. If I accumulate too many books again, I know where to take them.

Now I just need to get them to the drop off. There is a program here called Books To Prisoners. I went through all of mine and found a box full that I wouldn’t mind flipping through at some point, but I know I won’t get around to it. I think they will be worth using. There are some on art and photography, others on getting to know yourself and healing, psychology, etc. I feel better about not having them around if I know they might be helpful to someone else.

I’m trying to organize a book drive to get books in the hands of the needy hispanic children especially 0-5 in the NC Mountains. The book drive is to get books in the hands of kids that really need the boost. To promote literacy among hispanic children and help non English speakers begin to learn English as well. Among the new 4 years old entering Wilkes County Public Schools in NC there are 75% non English Speaking Hispanic children. THere is also a statistic stating 60% Hispanic children are failing their end of the year exams in this school system. Hopefully getting books in the hands of younger children can help them and encourage Literacy.

When I get the money I plan to donate books to our local library because I find myself irritated that many subjects have few books under them. Admittedly most of the books that I want to be made available to the libraries are books about foreign languages, lands, and etiquettes. I am honestly getting frustrated in my search for things at the library that I’m interested in that do not fall under the category fiction. I know that the internet is great but maybe I want a book about Romania’s History & not just some garbled mess off of the internet! I believe that people post things on the internet carelessly & therefore people get the facts wrong…with books you usually see an editor pour over it & fix the mistakes while on the internet you never fix it and some poor college students get the wrong information about Iceland or some other such place! Not to mention the fact that a lot of the stuff on the internet is never dated meaning that you can’t see if the data you’ve found is ancient or new, reliable or not!

-sighs I just think that it’s very annoying and sad.

There is a place in Massachusetts that accepts book donations. They use them to help local nonprofit groups. Basically, they are great about getting them into the hands of people who will use them. The offer a free pick-up service in Massachusetts, NH and RI. They have collections containers in seven states. You can also mail them to them. I donated a copy of one of the Harry Potter books to my local public library. The waiting list was SO long (after it had just come out) that the librarians seemed grateful for the help. Kids love their Harry Potter, haha. Who am I kidding, I love it too….

...at our elementary school each year. It feels good to put books into the hands of children who otherwise wouldn’t have any.
