"Take the Savannah Way, and if possible do it by bicycle. "
How I did it: I bought a moderately priced mountain bike, put on my good tyres, filled my panniers with the right gear and a few supplies, bought a map, phoned the RACQ beforehand to check out the condition of the road (after all the flooding), and began peddling. A little over four weeks later my new bike failed me (but it need not have if i had been forewarned and had an opportunity to put in a better bottom bracket - something the shop guys should have done since I told them where I was going. Anyhow since i couldn't get it fixed this side of Darwin I finished the journey by bus and lift from someone going that way.
Darwin is great at this time of year. I highly recommend it. (Winter)
Leaving home mid May was also highly fortuitous. Early May to Mid June would also be a fine time to leave the east coast.
Lessons & tips: About Darwin - the best things are the tall trees, the art galleries, the markets, the weather, I suppose the sunsets are good but i didn't get to spend much time looking. I like the aboriginal element of the top end a great deal. Learn a didgeridoo. I had a go but have a way to go before mastering it. Walk a lot. The esplanade is nice. The genearl casual ambiance is so romantic there. I would like to live there for a one winter. Maybe it can be my new goal.
There are no cheap places to stay in central darwin. The Caravan parks are far out of town.
Try the Green Vanilla Slice at the Greek restaurant in Cullen Bay Marina area. Its spectacularly delicious.
The cakes at cafe 21 in the mall are also rather yummy. Good food in Darwin in general I thought.
There is something to be said for capital cityism. Lots of money gets spent on the right things in such places.
The botanical gardens is very nice.
Resources: The tourist information there is all about selling tours and such. Not up my ally at all.
