    tipulophobia 3 years ago

    fear of crane flies.

Example sentence: I have a monstrous case of tipulophobia that may require therapy and medication to overcome. (How stinkin’ pathetic is that!!!).
I could barely stand to look at the picture in order to post it. It gave me the heebie jeebies and no kidding, made me want to cry! I would rather see a crazed lunatic coming at me with a knife and that is NOT an exageration. I found this word after I looked up “fear of crane flies” on the internet. Apparently I am not the only one… EEEEWWWWW, just look at that poor, disgusting creature. I may have to take that picture down because I can hardly bear it.

P.S. I know they are harmless, and in fact they don’t even have mouths. Apparently they go their whole lives without eating! Even more creepy, if you ask me! Add to my list of scary, scary bugs: grasshoppers and big, green beetles. And I wanted to be a ranger!

    juxtapose juhk-stuh-pohz 3 years ago

to place side by side or close together, especially for comparison or contrast.

I am still not completely comfortable with how to use this word properly. I remember a super-smart friend of mine using this word in Shakespeare class way back in high school. I loved the sound of it so much that I have been hoping that I would someday be able to incorporate this word into my vocabulary so that I could sound super-smart too! Well many years later and still no luck! Feel free to send me your example sentences. I would love it!

    troglodyte 'tra-gl&-"dIt 3 years ago

1:a member of any of various peoples (as in antiquity) who lived or were reputed to live chiefly in caves.
2: a person characterized by reclusive habits or outmoded or reactionary attitudes.

My favorite way to use this word is as an insult. It was used repeatedly in a book that I read to refer to a very large and hairy, not-so-bright character. So it was often used something like this: “Shut up and get to work, you hairy troglodyte!”
I know, it sounds mean, and I haven’t really used it yet, but it was just so funny in the context of the book (Skinny Dip by Carl Hiaason) that I wrote it down and vowed to someday find the perfect time and place to use it.
