I’ve heard about fireflies my entire life and have always wanted to see one. I live and grew up in Southern California so there have never been any around. In the summer of ‘07, my band took a trip to our singer’s hometown in Ohio and we got to see fireflies for the first time. I never thought they would be so pretty. They are like little magical sparks of fireworks that blink through the sky. They are especially awesome just at dusk. I will never forget the first blink of light that I caught out of the corner of my eye. We couldn’t believe it and made our singer pull over so we could run and catch them. 100% worth the goal. I can’t wait to do it again.

I suppose really I do this every summer, but the changeling and I went about it more seriously the other night, and since then I keep having lightning bugs coming up to me all the time, so I suppose I’ll be catching them all summer now…

Great time with the kids. Always let the fireflies free after the night catching is done.

It’s one of those simple things of life you just got to do. :)
But they’re really not so pretty in the morning…just so ya know.

When my sister and I were little we used to run among stately pine trees at dusk chasing after these elusive bugs. We did catch some and put them in jars once or twice, but mostly we just scampered after them in childlike wonder. On rare instances now I’ll see them at night and think back to those long ago days.

back in Ohio and put them in a jar. I was 12 and I did not think that they were real until I saw them. We played badminton with “birdies” made sugar cookies and ate marshmallows right out of the bag. My Uncle was a policeman and had this cool retired police dog, Elmer. He would tell it to secure the house and it would run from door to door them sit right next to him. He would tell him to sing and he would howl it was so funny :)

Even though its not summer yet. Oh well.
I used to catch ‘em when I lived in VA I would let them free in my house. My dad hated that. Heehee.
