Nearly did it a few years ago but had to abandon the plan when i learned that it takes 3 months to get a visa. went to Norway instead (dead cheap with ryanair) and it was wonderful. went on the ferry from Haugesund to Stavanger and drove north through mad tunnels and over spectacular bridges. Still, St. Petersburg in the snow awaits.
