I have done a self-portrait exercise in a drawing class, but I’ve wanted to paint one since seeing my first Frida Kahlo. More than just a snapshot in time, the self-portrait can reveal the inner workings of the heart and soul of the painter.

My mom is an artist and they were having a self-portrait show at the gallery where she paints and anyone could enter. I ended up doing it and I had a blast. It turned out great!

We see ourselves in the mirror, thousands of times each day. But you don’t clearly see yourself until you draw or paint a self potrait. It’s like excavating a new place, with each detail, each certain whole and position of the skin, we learn new things about ourselves. We see new things and feel new things that were not there before. Maybe you just observe more, but maybe it’s actually finding yourself there, you can actually open up your soul this way, and it’s like seeing clearly to the other side. It really helped me find some meaning in who i was.
