"Scary, but fun!"
How I did it: I applied to do something called red raw at a comedy club. It was a think where newbies can start out and oldies can try new stuff.
So, I prepared new material, practiced and it over and over.
At my first gig was scary, the lights was bright and the audience invisible. I got some titters, but not as many laughs as I expected.
Second gig, new material. A lot more confident!
I knew what was coming, I ran out onto the stage, got more laughs, even did some improv. Felt awesome.
Lessons & tips: With stand up you need to be three things:
Funny, Imaginative and slightly mad.
You need more of a vivid imagination than most people think.
Now some pointers.
Number one: PREPARE MATERIAL! Don't wing it! make material, test it with your family, friends, therapist, Probation worker.
Number two: Ignore the graffiti on the walls. Scribbles of help me and 'Abandon all hope all ye who enter; are just jokes! CALM DOWN!
Number three: Run out onto the stage, YOU CAN DO THIS! TAKE THE CHALLENGE AND DECK IT!
Number four: a costumed act or an act where you play a character can be very very hard to pull off. If it's your first time, do an act as yourself.
Resources: None whatsoever.
