Younger years
I used to do this when I was 12-15 years old. There was actually a halau near where I lived, and with my Mom being from Hawaii, as well as us being part-Hawaiian, she really wanted me to dance hula to learn more about my roots. Unfortunately, I never really got into it as much as I could’ve, and was a rather average dancer, but I managed to do some performances and blend in. I was definitely not as confident and self-assured as I am today, so I didn’t appreciate the full benefit of hula, but when I have more time in the future, I just might re-visit this goal! I’ve been asked by one ‘kumu hula’ in particular to dance, and have been putting it off.

with great people. They also just won a competition in Hawaii. I’ve got to fully heal from the surgeries I had this year though before I return. Hula is one of the few art forms and spiritual practices with the power and grace to bring tears to my eyes. It’s also the toughest workout ever! When I hear the music, I have the urge to get up and join the dance. For its own reasons, hula is the vehicle that my body yearns to express its beauty and strength though. I can see myself doing this for the rest of my life.

I can’t wait to take this if my list on Wednesday! I do wonder if I’ll end up in the advanced class though. I haven’t danced hula in 6 years…I’ve been belly dancing instead. This is the first time I’m actually combining the two.

I signed up for a hula class through city recreation. I start next week. Probobly one of the few things I’ve been really excited about in awhile. It’s also the first time I haven’t been nervous for a dance class in the last couple of years.

I started hula in 4th grade while I lived in Hawaii and continued all the way until I began belly dancing in 9th grade. I’ve since taken flamenco and more belly dance, but I haven’t gone back to hula for a looong time. I’d like to start again.
