I’m finishing my interior design degree and feel like a bad designer. It doesn’t help that I just recently saw students work from another college, which appears to be better than mine.

Any suggestions on how to become a better designer? How do you know when you’ve accomplished this goal?

I need to improve my skills  — 3 weeks ago

I will learn more from other graphic artists and practice more myself outside of work in drawing, design, layout and other areas.

practice, practice, practice!  — 11 months ago

i have a degree in fashion design, but i struggle to keep interested some times. i know this is because i’m a natural born dilletante, and i think it would be the same no matter what career i had, i’d always think the grass is always greener. the somewhat constrictive nature of college sapped alot of my enthusiasm, but now i practice alot more. and you know what? it’s working, i find myself reminded of why i wanted to do this when i was fifteen. so now i’m just practicing and practicing, because i now genuinely WANT to get better at my designs.

To be a better Designer  — 12 months ago

Hey I am not basically from any art background but I still make some good designs by referring other’s designs and now really want to improve my design skill. Actually I started my carrier as a photo retouching, restoration and print artist and than changed into web designer and from last 5 years I am working as a web designer. But now want to go with current trends in web designing.

    Why  — 1 year ago

I feel I have the potential for a certain kind of artsy design. Maybe not the supermodern-rave-complicated kind, but simple, clean, but also pretty. I do that already, but I want my work to look more … polished and more special. Learning more Photoshop and Illustrator techniques is part of it and I feel I’ve come a long way since starting my current job. But doing it is the other part, and I just don’t have time to make lots of side design projects and develop “my” look. Must puzzle on this one some more.

Hmm.. Still wondering if that book will be of any help. I’m good at seeing design errors in my and other peoples work, but I don’t experiment enough to use that skill.

My enthusiasm for design is at an all-time low. Design is great, I like it more than most things in the universe, but I need to figure out how to stay passionate about it on a daily basis.

I’ve done some stuff I’m proud of in the past (and that people has recognized aswell), but I don’t consider myself an inborn designer, most of the time I can’t do anything, and most of it is crap IMO… it’s in those rare moments of insane inspiration that I surprise myself with something cool

Never finished but...  — 3 years ago

    Worth doing!

As much as you need experience you need to stay naive… So the best way to become a better designer is to not aim for it in itself and build experience but try new thing.
