    LOVE them! 23 months ago

No photos yet, but I did it. They look cool (or at least I think they do). People look at me differently – some hostile, some curious, some just friendly. It’s weird to feel like I need to hide them sometimes. Oh, and my scalp still hurts from the pulling/twisting “trauma”. They’re going to take a lot of maintenance at first. Tomorrow I’m going to a store in London, ON that carries dread care stuff. It’s fun. I finally feel like my appearance is starting to better match my self-image. Interesting feeling.

My hair’s pretty short right now (5” on top, 3” at the back) so I’m going to have to wait a while to do dreads. It’s probably better that way. I’ll have a college teaching gig through the summer – it’s probably not a good idea for me to shock the Powers That Be in the department or rest of the university. Don’t let anybody fool you – academia can be very conservative.

We’re nowhere near finished, but it’s getting much better. We’ve got most of the tope of my head done and around my crown is finished. It feels worthy of posting today because my boss finally noticed. I told her it had been cleared by the office manager.

When I asked my boss what her policy on visible tattoos was, she gave me this “are you serious” look and told me to ask the OM. I did, and she said it was fine by her. Hence, the armband.

It helps that the OM was hired with dreads.
