It’s pretty satisfying eating food from your own garden. I’ve got a pumpkin vine, too, but I doubt I’ll be eating from that, I just hope I can carve my own pumpkin this October.

A big high 2 years ago

I took an allotment (a parcel of land, rented from the council) with a neighbour, and we’ve got all sorts of crops planted and growing. Its hard work getting the plot in shape after 14 years of neglect, but its such a good feeling aching like mad at the end of a days digging and planting. One really rewarding aspect of it is the advice and good common sense you get from all the old geezers who have been doing it for about 250 years each. These old boys know everything about growing your own food, and love to share their experience with you. It makes you feel really connected with these people who so many younger people ignore or marginalise. Last week one of them told me to soak my pea seeds in paraffin to prevent mice eating them before they germinate. Who would have thought of that?
