When I learned to knit, I all ready was a crocheter. Why I didn’t learn to knit continental right from the start is beyond me—I hear it’s so much easier for people who are all ready used to holding the yarn that way! I do really well with the English style, but I’m told it’s important to know both methods so you can switch back and forth and avoid strain on either hand. Also, I’m looking at working with color and stranding and see that you hold one strand English while the other is continental anyway! I’ve half-heartedly attempted to learn a couple of times now and it felt so awkward. I know that you can knit faster because of the fewer movements, so that is very appealing. I just have to give it another go!

This English style of driving on the left hand side of the knitting really has got to stop.
I enjoy this style much better than the english method. It is much fast and has fewer movements. When I teach people how to knit I start with this, that way they don’t panic having to let go of one of the needles to ‘throw’ the yarn. It is also great for left-handed knitters.

I could do this, but it would feel wonky all of a sudden. The instructor tried to help, but when she grabbed my hands and forced them to move, I felt this rush of panic. Like I was being scolded. Having poor muscle memory means things take time. I don’t know if classes like this are right for me any more.
I do have the basics though, and can do it. Just takes perseverance. And maybe a few internet videos ;)

I’m signed up for a class at Stitches East called “Switch to Continental Style Knitting” in October.
Yay!

I was knitting a 6 row Fair Isle on a hat while in the car on vacation last week. I gave the two handed method a try and after a while got the hang of it. In no way am I sure of what the heck I’m doing, but the hat turned out nicely. It may be knit a bit tight so I’ll be trying this again.
