I am a proverbial net nerd. I love the net. I could not live without the net and all it affords me by way of life enrichment. I need to just have the right web IN IT’S PLACE, from Twitter interaction (not just one way broadcasting via Ping FM and Friendfeed) to blogs which need much improvement so competitive with other blogs.
Other tasks demanding attention: learn to write 3000 words a day, read 75 pages (or more or less depending on the material) but read plenty, exercise, do household tasks (NEAT) so I bring up step count.. see friends and family(beloved Laptop and loved PC permanent places in my life) etc etc 2 years ago

A major life change forced me to look over my life and decide what’s important and what is not. I guess you could say by participating in 43things I’m still screwing around, but that’s subjective. I’ve cut off my addiction to free online games and no longer linger on the internet just to be on it. Now I only go on at home when there’s a need to, like looking up directions or the hours of a store. I have much more time now to cook, clean, read, and spend time with people offline. It’s tiring to exert physical energy instead of just your fingers typing/clicking away but so worth it. Maybe in a couple months time I’ll have regressed or maybe improved to the point where I can say I’ve accomplished the goal. 3 years ago

How I did it: Filled my time with other meaningless activity.150 character minimum is lame. Why? Because sometimes you dont have anything to say. The end. Fin. Cut. Stop the presses. Shows over people. You don't have to go home but you can't stay here. Stop with the loitering. Make with the clicking of the mouse. Go spend time with your significant other.
You dont have one? Well honestly here are some tips for that:
1)Love yourself. Others can't love you if you do not love yourself.
2) Meeting people at bars and clubs never end well.
3) Stop looking. Don't give up hope but stop searching. Its always going to be the last place you look and never expected it to be.
4)Don't use dating sites. a few simple questions and some monthly payments are not going to mach you with Mr. or Ms Perfect. and people lie!
5) If and when you do meet someone. Always be honest and somewhat up front. Honesty builds trust.
6) Try not to go any farther than kissing on a first through third date. You'll look desperate and seem like thats all you want not a real realationship. (Remember to use protection and care!)

I really think this is an impossible task for me since I run a couple websites and volunteer to maintain some websites with groups I volunteer with. But when you “work”, you inevitably spend some time screwing around. At least I do. With the internet, it’s very easy to get distracted and “channel surf”. Especially since besides the “work”, my hobbies include a blog and podcast which is why I don’t see myself cutting the internet umbilical cord anytime soon. But now I’m hooked on some free online games. This is not good. 3 years ago

How I did it: Like kung fu training, this is actually an ongoing process.
I had to dig deep and uncover why I was wasting so much time online. I found out that I was comfortable in the past. Why be active when I could let my brain rot? In that sense, screwing around on the web wasn't unlike overeating or too much TV. It was a refuge.
I set a schedule for myself. I woke up early, dressed, ate breakfast, brushed my teeth, checked my mail, and went on to the next activity.
After a while, I found myself spending less time online, and what time I did spend online was for specific tasks instead of letting my mind wander for hours at a time. Read how I did it… 3 years ago

i’ve been happy that i dont waste time on tv, yet i waste time on the net. and once you’re on a page, times goes by fast, there is always something interesting to waste my time with. if i could just reduce 1 hour a day on the web, id have an extra 7 hours a week! that’s like a full work day. damn! so im going to try to reserve time on the weekend for waste of time site and use my time constructively and log myself when im doing stuff. today i really feel like waste of time! but im consciously deciding against it 4 years ago

This should help deter me from doing stuff like 43 things on work time. Maybe I should get a little rearview mirror, though, so I can see who’s coming down that hallway before they can see my screen. 4 years ago

Yep, giving this one up, at least for the summer.
This was a problem when I was in school; I was screwing around on the web a lot as a way to procrastinate and it got in the way of what I needed to get done. But now, I really don’t think I need to spend less time screwing around on the web. Its how I unwind after work, and I’m content with it.
Now, I still have more I want to accomplish, so I find myself using the internet as a way to avoid achieving what I want, I’ll add this goal back. 4 years ago

I was actually doing really well with this for a while. Spent a good deal more time getting out and doing things with friends or reading instead of getting online. Seems like I’m getting sucked back in a little but hopefully I can keep things balanced a little better than before. 4 years ago

When its time to work at the computer, I should just do it, and when its time to relax, I should just do that as well. Its never good when I procrastinate and surf around, looking at stuff I’m not all that interested in, feeling guilty that I should be doing homework. Its not relaxing, and I don’t get anything done.
Not that there aren’t a few sites I really like, this being one of them. Its just that procrastinating-internet-time that’s bad.
That being said, I’ve done enough homework for now, and its time to relax for the night. 4 years ago

I’m gonna start small by not going on Bebo for a week (cuz that’s my main problem) and then I’m going to cut down the time I spend on msn to about 1/2 hour to an hour each night. :D I need to spend less time on the computer and get out there more! :)

Working with computers and spending all day on one has really helped reach this goal. I have also tried to set limits on what I do on the computer when I am on, mostly getting on with a purpose in mind: checking email, doing schoolwork, updating my blog.
That itself is a major help not screwing around on the web as much. If you have something specific in mind, you are less likely to just surf hoping to find something interesting to look at. 5 years ago
