SpatzTherapy VII, round two
Today was the last day of therapy.
My leg is officially rehabilitated.
There are a few things I cannot do, but they will get better if I keep up doing my exercises and stay active.

Now the therapy part is nearly over and the focus is on strength and getting over the part in my brain that remembers the knee was hurt…
All in all, my knee is doing fine. It still hurts when I’m sitting – especially at work, but it’s getting better every day!
Now on to my last therapy session on Wednesday!
Today I had my fifth therapy session, during my work day again.
We focus on strength now, and that is so not fun :)
But it’s getting better, I can kneel now just fine. My bag leg is not yet as fully bendable as my other leg, but that will pass over time.
Two more sessions to go.

My accident insurance accepted my accident as an accident.
Phew.
In one year, if permanent damage occurred, I can file a claim.
And I still have to find out if they will pay my co-pay for my physio therapy.
But I got a case number :-)

Yesterday, I had my fourth therapy session at noon.
Having therapy during my work day is really hard on me, I feel very tired afterwards – and always a little sad.
Again, I was told to work harder on my strength and stretch more.
Oh well.
At least I’m seeing progress.

Today, we mastered the stairs.
I managed to go down one whole flight.
So, I’m allowed back on the stairs. I’m not supposed to overdo it but I can start walking up and down the stairs.
Back to my stairs project :-)

Back to the stair stepping, no progress yet. A very easy and basic stretching exercise might be possible to try this weekend.
My husband built me a mini stair in half step height in the afternoon so I can practice my stair climbing in the weekend. The standard step is 22cm high and the mini step is 11cm.
I hope that next week I can start going down standard stairs!

Today, I had the first PT session of my 2nd therapy phase.
Somehow, my insurance decided that this time, I’ll have 45min of training and no ultrasound.
Ok, why not, I thought.
Ouch, that was rather hard on my leg!
We worked on going down a step. The standard training step is still too high for my leg, and for training at home my husband will have to build a”mini step”for me.
But I’ll get there….
Soon I’m back on the stair project!

Today, I had my last checkup at the hospital.
I had to wait for two hours and the checkup lasted a whooping 5 minutes…
Ok, my knee is fine, and the leg could do better. I should continue my PT.
Well, now that I’ve got that in writing, perhaps my insurance will agree…

So the second day without the brace is coming to an end.
It’s been rather tough, my leg hurts quite a lot. Not my knee, though, that’s fortunate – it’s the rest of the leg that’s complaining.
I’ll have my final “inspection” on Monday at the hospital and that will decide wether I get another set of PT treatments. I hope they decide for the therapy, I think I could use a little assistance…

It marks the end of my first round of PT sessions. I’ll start the next round – seven more treatments – next week.
Today, I got to discard my brace for good. My walking is fine for everyday use, and I can stand on my bad leg for 10 seconds.
Now on to the next goal: standing up and sitting down using both legs. I’m used to standing up and sitting down using my brace, so I only used one leg and relied on my arms a lot. 7 weeks of doing that leave traces, I’m afraid. So, a new exercise for me!
The final visit to the hospital will be on Monday…

Today, I got to stand on a single leg – on my bad leg, too! It was rather uncomfortable, but I managed.
The goal – to be met until Wednesday – is to manage to stand for 10 seconds on the bad leg on wobbly ground – to be simulated by a folded blanket.
I got a few exercises more, I’ll be busy the next weeks.
And to stop feeling so vulnerable, I bought my first pair of gymn shorts since I finished high school. No more doing exercises in my undies :)
Only thing left is the control visit at the hospital that made the first diagnose and then the brace can be ditched for ever. For the moment, no brace at home and at the office. Brace on on the street.

Today I showed the MR scan results to my PT.
And now I got a totally new training routine. The brace comes off when I’m sitting and – if I’m comfortable with it – at night.
And I’m supposed to practice walking without the brace for 5 minutes a day.
Now I’ll have to go looking for a weight for my foot for training – I’m hoping one of my sporty colleagues has one!

Today, I went to my GP to show him the MRI results.
So, the plan is:
No surgery necessary.
I’ll be handed over to the PT team and they’ll see what they can do for me :-)
I’m expected to be back walking in two weeks and back to normal in 1 month.
Hooray!

I had my fourth PT session today – now I’m up to 3 exercises to be done with the brace on and 3 without.
The knee is a little tender as I did my exercise two times yesterday – I think I’ll call it quits for today, give it a little rest. Tomorrow comes soon enough :)
And at 4pm I finally got the result of the MRI.
The LCL is not torn through, just a signal alteration is visible. The posterior horn of the meniscus is showing some signal alteration but that might be degenerative. No tears visible there, too. Everything else is perfect.
Soooo, I think this will change my PT routine :-)
I’ll go and see my GP to see what he thinks – but for them moment I’m happy the ligaments are not torn. We’ll see what to do for the meniscus – the Internet points to conservative treatment and PT.
Hooray!

Today was the big day – I’ve had my MRI.
First, I had my third therapy session – and my physiotherapist was very pleased with my progress. I got a new routine and hope to make progress and rebuild a little muscle!
And in the evening, I finally had my MRI done. I had to remove my glasses, watch and shoes and was told to lie down. My kne was fixed, and I got ear phones for noise protection (and a panic button). And into the machine it goes.
There were a lot of strange banging and whirring and strange noises at a surprisingly loud level and my marriage ring vibrated throughout the 10 minutes I spent in there.
On Friday at 4pm I get my diagnostic papers.
Keep your fingers crossed for good news!

At 6:45 in the morning, the diagnostic centre called – or rather tried to call as my mobile is off until 7:30 am.
The MRI “machine” they had planned to use on my knee is damaged. They have to reschedule. My new appointement is on Wednesday evening.
I can’t claim that I’m too happy about that, but now that I’ve waited over 5 weeks, two days don’t really make a difference…

Today, I headed to my second appointment with my physiotherapist before unpacking my luggage :)
The treatment was rather unpleasant and painful, but now I feel much better. I never knew massage could be so painful.
And she told me the reason for this really bad pain in my shins: the shoes I wore for the last two days don’t provide enough stability for my foot. That explains a lot!
Now on to two more treatments next week! Hooray.

I had my first physiotherapy today.
Well, that’s not going to be fun. I had a quite painful massage of some muscles around my knee, and ultrasound treatment.
And I was shown two exercises that can be done even on my vacation. I can bend and move my ankle and I can press down my stretched leg. Well, that will have to do. I’m supposed to be doing this daily. I think I can do that.
The therapist also did an exam of the knee and found some instability but not much. That sounds hopeful. Maybe it will be much easier, as it might be that the ligament is not fully torn.
Hooray.

I finally overcame my fears and called the physiotherapist.
I have my first appointement tomorrow and one directly after our vacation.
Now I’ll find out what the strange abbreviations on my doctors reference mean!
The second week started worse than the first week with a lot of pain and ended quite fine!

I’m very hopeful I’ll have no problems walking around wonderful Sweden! 9 months ago
So, today I went and saw my GP.
I asked him about rehab and got a transferral to an institute doing physiotherapy which is conveniently located just across the road from the doctors.
And I was advised that I can start rehab on the two weeks mark, meaning, next week. Perhaps a massage and a short training session.
He described all the things that could go wrong with my knee and now I’m a afraid. He made it sound like I should be in permanent alarm to go to the ER – well, if you look at how that happened, everybody should be, obviously.
Or boycott the wash permanently :-)
I’ll travel to Sweden anyway, I’ve heard they have ERs there, too, if it comes to that…
And once I’m back, I can really start the rehab! 9 months ago
The first week with the brace is over.
It was not the most fun of all weeks, and it was not that easy to get my mind around to accept that there is something wrong with my knee.
So, the plan for next week is:
So I went and saw the doctor who’s seeing the patients while my GP is on vacation.
Well.
He advised me to wear the brace day and night, hinted that not only the LCL but also the ACL might be damaged.
He prescibed some NSARs and I was told to take it easy and wait for the MRI.
It’s to soon to talk about therapy and rehab, I was told. Doing nothing is not exactly what I had in mind.
And next week I’ll do it all again, this time with my GP…

I called today to schedule the MRI checkup the doctor from the hospital recommended.
Ha! The next free spot is in 5 weeks :(
I’ll take that as a chance to check on my progress in 5 weeks. It won’t help to feel angry anyway.
And my GP is on vacation for the next two weeks. I’ll spend the weekend pondering if I should wait those two weeks or go to another doctor….
Always look on the bright side of life…10 months ago
