Stop sending the cards now! 2 years ago

    Hi Everyone,

I don’t know if you have heard but Shane and his family have requested that people stop sending cards now.

So please stop sending cards now!

Happy Birthday Shane! 2 years ago

Shane’s birthday was 2 days ago. I almost forgot! But guess what.

Shane has received more than 1 million birthday cards!

You can find out about Shane’s wish here.

Wow. His is still far from his goal of 350 million. I think that’s kind of crazy, but who knows right?

I guess we have a lot more work to do.

Dudes...I totally flaked. 2 years ago

I did not do this, I soooo suck.

I hope Shane had a great day, and I’m so impressed that you are all so wonderfully thoughtful to be a part of it. More than me, apparently!

I almost forgot 2 years ago

I sent my card a couple of weeks ago. My only regret is that I’m afraid I haven’t encouraged enough people to do the same :-(

Please send Shane a card if you haven’t done so already. You can read more about his quest here.

It’s getting close now. I’ll pick up a wonderful birthday card for the little guy tomorrow.

I am not sure why this was still on my list of goals.. 2 years ago

As I had finished this very nearly a month ago now, but had yet managed to get my “procrastination gear” shifted speedily , and finally write a post about it!
It kind of came about in a funny way really, one that made me wonder about the workings of the world, and how many things in this life are coincidence, and how many are far from it.

The day I had finished this goal, I had woken up early in the morning, with a determined drive to complete this goal that very day for some reason,(and hopefully before this lads birthday came and went!) And though I was feeling quite miserable that day, and wanted to crawl back into bed and pull the covers over my face for another week or two, I got up anyway knowing I needed to get this done, and that no matter how crappy I was feeling, Shane was most likely feeling worse.

So I went about writing the Special Birthday Boy a letter to tuck in with his card, and then proceeded to fill the envelope with all manners of shiny glitter, confetti, and objects of interest that would explode upon opening (the good kind, not the banned mail bombing kind to be sure!), and hopefully evoke a smile from a boy in much need of one.
    And most definitely deserving.
(Though I am sure his Mom will be cursing me for weeks afterwards when she finds bits of glitter attached to every object in the house, as it continually circulates through the air ducts.)
I then went off to town for my final task of picking out some stickers to add to the glittery mess, and a stamp to post it with. I felt almost lighter after the letter left my hand and into the post office box, a smile spreading across my face. It felt so good to let someone you have never known who is suffering through their own battles, that you care about them, and hold them in your thoughts. I never even signed my name, or placed a return address, but merely signed it ” With much love, from your Friends in( and them my home town name)”.

I skipped off to do my shopping, and headed back home. And while I was putting things away in the cupboard, and being threatened to be taken over by canned goods, melting ice cream, and enough paper bags to start an art class with, there was a knock at the door.

My sister strolled in with more bags in tow ,of things she has found in her wondrous travels , ( as we both love to frequent thrift stores in hunt of cast off treasures, and and items just begging to be remade.) So while I continued to stuff things into my pantry at alarming angles, she proceeds to pull out a piece of paper from her pocket, and says to me, ” I don’t know if you would have already heard of this or not, but knowing you , you probably already have….”, and there scribbled down in her hand writing is the two words “Shane Bernier”. I looked at her baffled for a moment , and then started to laugh.
I had never mentioned this goal to my sister before,or shared his story, because she herself has only just past the all important “Five Year Mark” of being a Cancer free survivor. During which time she has helped others waging this war, and has been involved in Cancer fund raisers, and support to many of those around her. And I didn’t want her to feel obliged to be involved in everything “Cancer” related , or begin to feel overwhelmed, when perhaps she would just rather forget …(as I know it’s always there some where in the back of her mind as to whether this may come back or not. )

I should have known better, for she wanted to help as much as I did. Seems she had learned about it from a friend on the Internet much like I had ( thank you Funtash!), shopped for stickers, and recently mailed the letter too!

This is not the first time our lives have overlapped like this unknowingly. So I ask you, is this a sister thing? The hand of fate? Pure coincidence? Or simply Serendipity showing me another hidden treasure in life I may otherwise have missed?

MAY MANY BLESSINGS AND GOOD HEALTH BE YOURS NOW, AND FOREVER!
