How to try rock climbing
How I did it: I've always wanted to try rock climbing, it looked like a fun time and an amazing challenge--but I've always been too scared and too self-concious to do so. So, when I was told my college was building a new fieldhouse (gym) I was super excited to hear that a rock climbing wall was going to be put in as well! It just opened a couple of weeks ago, so I signed up to go with a mid-sized group from my dorm to try it out. At first I super scared, and really nervous, especially when we had our first climbing lesson and I kept messing up the knots and holds we were supposed to be learning. But, with the help of my partner (a super nice guy who had been climbing since he was a boy scout) I finally had my chance to climb the wall! I didn't make it all the way to the top, but hey, it was my first time! I did make it up halfway though, and I was super proud of myself. Now that I've tried a little rock climbing, I'm ready for a new goal for this semester--to make it to the top of that wall!!! : )
Lessons & tips: Just sign up and try it! It really helped me to know that I had commited on paper to try it and it also helped to know that I had others to go along with me.

my sister and i went to RI Rock Gym twice this week and we are obsessed!
it is really scary when you get to the top and have to let go and just go down… you really have to trust the person belaying you
this is definitely a hobby and i will be continuing with
i tried it wen i was in seventh grade n still remember it really well, the climbing part is fun but i enjoyed the rappling part so so so so so much more…i’m terrified of heights but it was all worth it…

Wow! After almost a year from stating this goal and much more time from starting to think about it- I finally managed to try. I went to climbing center last week and managed to climbe 3 walls all the way to the top. Ok, I was stressed out because I am afraid of heights. Someone may think that is nothing really as artificial walls are “easy” but for me that was something. I am actually proud of myself. And I enjoyed it so I am sure I’ll be back there soon. And will climb another more challenging wall:)
The westerville rec cntr has a 2-hour rock climbing class on may 11th for $5. You can’t beat that. It is time to accomplish this goal!
Tomorrow I’m headed into Lifetime to talk to them about upgrading my memberhsip to a Sports Membership. I want to try the rock climbing and I want to learn to play raquetball and both those goals will be easier if my membership gives me access to those opportunities at the gym.
Questions to ask Greg:
1. How will a Sports membership save me money on the rock climbing?
2. I want to learn to play raquetball. What type of features does the club offer for that?
3. Are there any times I can just reserve a raquetabll court and practice on my own?
It was definetly harder than I expected. It was great exercise, could be a little too expensive as a regular hobby though.
It was scary at first, but I made it to the top of six different runs! I was sweating like a pig and sore for almost a full week afterward, but I’m going again anyway. :)
but it’s been a few years so I can’t be trusted with your life just yet until I relearn the ropes—ha! But I think I did OK because no one came crashing down. I want to start from the beginning at an indoor gym in the SF Bay Area. My partner(s)should be a novice (very novice) climber or have some patience with me yet an expert at belaying. I do not want to die before I get a few more things done.
One of the best things I’ve ever done. (And continue to do.) If you have a serious fear of heights, warm up with an attempt at bouldering.
Whatever you do, take a class with experienced climbers before you try it on your own.
