Fell in love with a city 8 months ago

It had happened to me before. Ten years ago. And it happened again one last saturday.

I went on a trip to north Finland in order to see the aurora borealis. My second stop (after Helsinki) was Rovaniemi, a small city in the Arctic Circle Line. I felt that again, this feeling, this thought: I want to live here.

I spent such a great time here. I meet awesome people, and I felt quite good being there.

I know it’s cold, I know I come from a big city, I know people in Finland are less social than my own country’s people and that might be difficult for my adaptation. But I’m going to try because it felt so strong.

I know it’s going to take time, maybe years; and it’s going to be hard. But I’m still trying. Maybe one day…

PS: By the way, I didn’t get to see the aurora, just in case you where curious. It’s still in my 43things list. But hey! I can’t say I tried. And I will try again someday, that’s for sure…

Things change. 17 months ago

I still agree with most of the things I wrote earlier about Finland. But I have also realized that among all those negative things there are lots of positive sides in my home country.

I’ve been living abroad now for about two years and I think this is an experience everyones should have. I was told that my perspective might change and I waited it to happen and it did. I respect Finland so much more today, its people, its beautiful language, its music and literature and newspapers.

I suppose I needed to go far to see close.

Been there, done that. 2 years ago

I was living there for the first 19 years of my life. It’s a good and safe place to live, but also homogenic, xenophobic, small and quiet. People are introvert, depressed and alcoholic. Nothing ever happens there. It’s far away from everything. Winters are long, dark, and cold.

I didn’t enjoy myself there and was happy to get away.

Hyvä Suomi!! 2 years ago

I’m just about to leave Finland, my home for the last three years. I love this country so much, and I’d love to come back. This is a long term goal though. It will be a few years until I come back.

Still thinking about it 2 years ago

I’ve pretty much decided to move to Canada, but the idea of living in Finland at some point is still there in the back of my mind. I’d love to do this, even if only for six months or so, which is why I still try and keep up my Finnish. Just in case…
